The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his instructions have good insight. His praise endures forever. Psalm 111:10 CSB

Today’s scripture will be familiar to many. These words are repeated verbatim in Proverbs 9:10, and similar statements occur throughout the Bible’s wisdom books. Psalm 111, however, provides a practical guide to developing “the fear of the Lord” and getting on the pathway to wisdom.

It all begins with praise (v. 1), and praise comes by our recognition of what God has done—since that’s a reflection of who He is. God performs great, delightful works that are worthy of study (v. 2). His “splendid and majestic” doings show an enduring righteousness (v.3). He helps people to remember such works, because He is “gracious and compassionate” (v. 4). He provides for physical needs and honors His promises (v. 5). He is truthful, and His Word is established forever (vv. 7-8). The fact that He redeems people gives Him a “holy and awe-inspiring” name (v. 9).

This was all true for the ancient Israelites, the first audience for Psalm 111. But it is also true for us, who possess not only the Old Testament scriptures but the Lord Jesus Himself through His Holy Spirit.

If you want to be wise, review God’s works—in His written Word, the Bible, and in your own life. Delight in His goodness. Study His majesty. Trust His promises. You’ll be well on your way.

Prayer: Lord, I want to be wise. Remind me of Your wonderful works.
