So Joseph made ready his chariot and went up to Goshen to meet his father Israel; and he presented himself to him, and fell on his neck and wept on his neck a good while. And Israel said to Joseph, "Now let me die, since I have seen your face, because you [are] still alive." Genesis 46:29-30 ESV
The sin of ten brothers affected many. Each had to live with the memory of selling his brother Joseph into slavery. Joseph had to live with the unwanted circumstances he faced in Egypt. Their father endured many years of lies, believing Joseph was dead.
Many books portray skeletons in the closet. The stories unfold to reveal something about a character you’d never expect. Maybe people can relate to this dynamic because it’s real life. It happened in Joseph’s family. You may recognize it in yours.
God has always asked His family to confess sin. This means agreeing that God’s laws are better than your own judgments, admitting that you didn’t make the right choice, and accepting His forgiveness.
He also wants you to make things right with anyone you’ve wronged as a lawbreaker. You may endure the consequences of sin, but God never wants you to act as if sin is no big deal.
For Joseph’s family, it was complete honesty that led to an epic reunion.
Prayer: Father, why is it so easy for me to hold on to sin and refuse to admit You are right to call it wrong? Help me confess to You and to others when I fail.
