He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform. Romans 4:20-21 NKJV

Paul draws on Abraham’s example of faith to inspire us when doubts arise. Believing God’s promise when he had no practical reason to is a hallmark of faith that anticipates the power of the gospel. Abraham had already left behind his homeland to answer God’s call, and when God told him He was going to bless all the world’s families through his currently nonexistent line, Abraham didn’t doubt God’s power.

Abraham’s view of God was big. He believed that God was God, capable of doing whatever He decided to do and worthy of all his trust. Christians have seen this promise fulfilled in Christ—the work of a God big enough to save the world from sin.

When we think of God’s work, we need to see it as finished—not just Jesus’ work at the cross and His resurrection, but everything after it: our salvation, sanctification, and ultimate glory, all accomplished in God’s eyes, all done now, even as we walk through it all. That kind of faith glorifies God and strengthens us to stand in hard times.

Prayer: God, when You say it is finished, it is—not just my salvation but everything between now and Your eternal kingdom. Strengthen my faith in Your good work.
