The Starfish
- August 08, 2005
While walking on the coast guard pier in Monterey, California yesterday, my eyes were drawn to the beautiful starfish in the water. They gracefully lay draped upon the rocks in the Monterey Bay. Their color was a vivid orange, just vibrant and appearing so full of life. The starfish seemed to be attached to the rock in some manner, but would sway gracefully with the ebb and flow of the water.
Today I saw some of the same starfish at low tide. As the water had receded, they were exposed to the air. They were dried up and almost void of color.
Comparing these starfish reminded me of my relationship with God. When I am in Him, and allowing Him to be in me, I will remain vibrant in His love. Even during difficult times, I can cling to Him, just as the starfish had done with the rock. However, when I allow myself to be removed from His presence, I will dry up spiritually; just as the starfish had when removed from the water.
The good news is, although there are times when many of us feel withdrawn from God, He is always here with us. As surely as the ebb and flow of the tides, we can depend on the fact when that we reach out to Him, He will receive us and we will be filled with Him by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Thank you, Lord, for the awareness that my "dry spells" of spirituality are only temporary. No matter how I feel, I have the assurance that You are available to me.
