He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. John 1:10

In the world.—This manifestation in the flesh recalls the pre-incarnate existence during the whole history of the world, and the creative act itself. (Comp. John 1:2-3, Note). The two facts are the constant presence of the true Light, and the creation of the world by Him. The world, then, in its highest creature man, with spiritual power for seeing the true Light, ought to have recognized Him. Spirit ought to have felt and known His presence. In this would have been the exercise of its true power and its highest good. But the world was sense-bound, and lost its spiritual perception, and “knew Him not.”

Hello @jillo,

Having read Ellicott's Commentary notes on the verse (above) that you supplied in your OP, and Looking at John 1:4, 'In Him was life; and the life was the light of men,' I don't think I can entirely agree with Ellicott's words concerning this verse that you quote. The life that was in Christ was the light of men. John the Baptist came to bear witness to that Light, which was the Lord Jesus Christ, God's only begotten Son.

'Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying,
I am the light of the world:
he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness,
but shall have the light of life.'
(John 8:12)

'As long as I am in the world,
I am the light of the world.'
(John 9:5)

Praise God!

Thank you
In Christ Jesus

A world without him is a world spinning to into doom.
Human nature abhors a vacuum as much as mother nature does. Without the Holy Spirit, evil spirits are naturally sucked in to fill the void in our heart which is reserved for God or any higher being you would like to call it, hence the parable of the empty house and evil spirits.

Well; there's more to humanity than just the sphere of the Jews so I'd have to say
that the "light" has been present everywhere all the time rather than only when
Jesus was here because the apostle John said The Word enlightens every man who
comes into the world, not just some men who come into the world.

That tells me that The Word has been actively enlightening indigenous folks-- e.g.
Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, Inuits, Pigmies, Asiatics, etc --ever since the
day they came into existence as a people.

Now, seeing as the Bible hasn't always been in existence, then how might The Word
have been enlightening folks without it? Well according to Ps 19:1-4 & Rom 1:19-20,
the realm of nature has been speaking for God all along. Nature's preaching may not
pound a pulpit; but its construction speaks volumes.
