There is no spiritual gift called “the gift of tongues”.

There is, unfortunately, a rather common misconception among professing Christians, of a supposed spiritual gift called “the gift of tongues” in the church of the Lord Jesus Christ. When the truth of the Word of God is presented unto such people, many of them will shut their ears, cast the truth behind their backs, and judge themselves unworthy of everlasting life. Even as the Lord Jesus testified of the stiffnecked Jews in the days of his flesh saying that:

"...This people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them."
— (Matthew 13:15).

The supposed “gift of tongues” only serves one purpose; and that is to cause confusion. Wherefore it is written in the scriptures:

"If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God..."
— (1 Peter 4:11).

And again:

"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding."
— (Proverbs 3:5).

Jesus Christ said:

"...If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
— (John 8:31-32).

It is also written:

"To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them."
— (Isaiah 8:20).

Having said this, the scriptures testify that:

"...When the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilæans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judæa, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God."
— (Acts 2:1-11).

This is what the Word of God says; that they began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. When this was noised abroad, the Jews who were out of many nations under heaven, heard these tongues and they understood them.

This is that which will happen when men and women receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. They will:

"...Speak with tongues, and magnify God..."
— (Acts 10:46).

And this is a sign which will follow those that believe! For it is written that Jesus Christ said:

"...These signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues..."
— (Mark 16:17).

And Peter said that the promise is:

"...Unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call."
— (Acts 2:39).

Friends, this is the gift of the Holy Ghost. Christ in you, the hope of glory. All christians have this gift. It is written:

"...Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his."
— (Romans 8:9).

Now, concerning spiritual gifts:

"...There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; to another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: but all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will."
— (1 Corinthians 12:4-11).

We can see from the scripture that one of these spiritual gifts is a gift called divers kinds of tongues. It is followed with another spiritual gift called interpretation of tongues. Wherefore, there is no spiritual gift which causes Christians to speak with tongues called "the gift of tongues". But, there is a gift called divers kinds of tongues which causes some Christians to speak with diversities of tongues. Which means many different kinds of tongues, not just one. Though every Christian has the gift of the Holy Ghost (for if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his), not every Christian has the gift of divers kinds of tongues; or the gift of interpretation of tongues. This is why it is written in the scripture that God:

"...Hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?"
— (1 Corinthians 12:28-30).

But alas, some people subconsciously remove the words “divers kinds” which changes the definition of the entire gift; this is a dangerous thing indeed. We should be very careful with how we speak the Word of God. For it is written:

"Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you."
— (Deuteronomy 4:2).

Furthermore, the same spiritual gifts are not given to everyone in the church. Because:

"...As the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many. If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. And if they were all one member, where were the body? But now are they many members, yet but one body. And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary: and those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness. For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked: that there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another. And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it."
— (1 Corinthians 12:12-26).

When a man speaks with tongues, whether by the gift of the Holy Ghost or by the gift of diversities of tongues, he will not understand what he is uttering. And this is on purpose. For the Spirit:

"...Also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God."
— (Romans 8:26-27).

It is therefore written again in the scriptures:

"...He that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries."
— (1 Corinthians 14:2).

However, this is not an opportunity for us to behave like Apostolics/Pentecostals, which shout, tremble, speak with other tongues without order, and run around in the middle of a church meeting; pretending that they do these things by the Spirit of God, though they may have the gift of the Holy Ghost and his spiritual gifts. It is written:

"If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?"
— (1 Corinthians 14:23).

In them is the scripture fulfilled which saith:

"Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them."
— (Psalm 68:18).

Such behavior is contrary to the holy scriptures, which say:

"If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God."
— (1 Corinthians 14:27-28).

And so it is, my friends. All Christians have the gift of the Holy Ghost which causes them to speak with tongues, and magnify God. But not all have the gift of diversities of tongues. All Christians may receive an interpretation of God. For it is written:

"...Let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret."
— (
1 Corinthians 14:13).

But not all have the gift of interpretation of tongues. All Christians may prophesy. For it is written:

"...Ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted."
— (1 Corinthians 14:31).

But not all Christians are prophets (given the spiritual gift of prophecy). All Christians may be used of God to heal people. For it is written that these signs shall follow them that believe:

"...They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."
— (Mark 16:18).

But not all Christians have the gifts of healing. Dear friends, I pray that you can now see by the grace of God how absurd the notion of “the gift of tongues” is. It is wholly foreign to the scriptures and is a perversion of a legitimate spiritual gift, namely, divers kinds of tongues. Let us therefore:

"...Earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints."
— (Jude 1:3).

Let the church therefore remain faithful to his Word. Because Christ:

"...Gave himself for it; that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish."
— (Ephesians 5:25-27).

Yet there are some among you whose necks are iron sinews, and their brows brass; who are still not convinced by the Word of truth. To them, the scriptures say that in the law it is written:

"...With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not..."
— (1 Corinthians 14:21-22).

Tongues are a sign to you, o stiffnecked unbeliever!

But as it is written:

"...If any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant."
— (1 Corinthians 14:38).

And to the rest of you:

"Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters..."
— (Isaiah 55:1).

Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time forth and for evermore!

He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. Amen.

Well, Your title " There is no spiritual gift called “the gift of tongues ”. Which seemingly suggests that speaking in tongues is not a gift.

First, we must acknowledge that Scripture speaks of speaking in tongues as being a spiritual gift. Paul wrote to the Corinthians. He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and to another the ability to prophesy.

1Co 12:1

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware.

1Co 12:10
and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.

If there are no spiritual gifts of tongues, please explain what YOU would call the ability to speak or pray in tongues.

Would this not be considered a gift? And yes....

I ask because I do pray in tongues. I know it is from something other then myself for I am not, nor have I ever been able to speak a "foreign" langusge that requires the rolling of the "Rs" as does French.

But when OI have prayed in tongues I have had a perfectly flawless R rolling that I could not accomplish, and still cannot unless that was how I was praying.

Aside from that... Jesus said in Mrk 16:17 " 17 These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues;"

You do not consider that would hhave been a gift?

OR are you among those who believe THE ORIGINAL ENDING of Mark to be so deficient that not only was Mark placed second in order in the New Testament, but various endings were added by editors and copyists in some manuscripts to try to remedy things, as they considered Mark 16:8 to be too short and that something was left off?

Some folks believe the ending was a long concocted ending, which became Mark 16:9-19, AND became so treasured that it was included in the King James Version of the Bible, favored for the past 500 years by Protestants, as well as translations of the Latin Vulgate, used by Catholics. This meant that for countless millions of Christians it became sacred scripture, even though Mark , as many believe, Mark did not end his account this way.

Others say it is patently bogus... and I am among those who, for personal reasons, do hope this be the case.... but just in case, would , as stated, " those who have believed: in My name ... will speak with new tongues; " not be a gift. A reward so to speak?

The following is a short article on Spiritual Gift of Tongues

Spiritual Gift of Tongues

There is a lot of information that has been written about the spiritual gift of tongues over the years, yet the Bible only mentions it in a few places. Many denominations see the gift of tongues as a divine reward for receiving the Holy Spirit and a true sign of the believer. It is construed as a special relationship with God and speaking a language special to Him and to others with the gift.
However, there are two key Biblical truths that contradict the gift to be seen in this way. First, the gift of Tongues was given originally at Pentecost and enabled the Apostles to speak in languages that were not their own in order to spread the Good News. People from other lands understood them clearly and there was no mention of a special language. Secondly, the spiritual gifts are given for the benefit of the whole body. Speaking in tongues as these denominations adhere to are not for the benefit of the body and could ultimately create divisiveness. It could be seen as setting members of the body up as more important than others which is clearly against what Paul teaches.

Reading People

The spiritual gift of tongues is an instrument that the body uses to help communicate inside and outside of the body. A person with this gift is able to “read people” and communicate in a way that is appropriate. The gift of speaking and interpreting tongues is not restricted to languages and cultures, but also crosses generational, racial, and socioeconomic barriers. It is evidence to the believer of God’s intent for all to come to know Christ, and it is a means for those outside of the body to understand that Christ came for everyone including them.
A good way to describe this gift is with the term “ambassador”. Merriam-Webster dictionary defines ambassador as a diplomatic agent of the highest rank accredited to a foreign government or sovereign as the resident representative of his or her own government. A person with the gift of tongues should be seen as one who can build bridges between believers and non-believers and make those who may see themselves as “different” feel welcome in the body.

Tongues as a Special Language

Those who have the gift of tongues may experience a deep sense of connection to the Holy Spirit, and may feel as though they are praying or worshiping in a way that transcends human language. The gift may be used for personal prayer and worship, or in public settings such as church services or other gatherings.
It’s important to note that this interpretation of the gift of tongues can be controversial and is not universally accepted or practiced in all Christian denominations. Some Christians believe that the gift of tongues is evidence of the Holy Spirit’s presence and power, while others do not view it as a necessary or primary gift.
In his writings, Martin Luther was critical of the gift of tongues, which he saw as a potential source of confusion and disorder in the church. He believed that the gift of tongues described in the New Testament was a miraculous ability to speak in foreign languages for the purpose of spreading the Gospel to people of different cultures. But he also believed that the gift had ceased to be a common occurrence after the early church era.
Regardless of one’s views on the gift of tongues, it is important to approach it with humility and discernment, and to use spiritual gifts in a way that honors God and benefits others.

Martin Luther on the Spiritual Gift of Tongues

Martin Luther had a complex view on the spiritual gift of tongues, which he saw as both a genuine gift of the Holy Spirit and a potential source of confusion and division within the Church.
On the one hand, Luther believed that the gift of tongues, as described in the book of Acts, was a genuine manifestation of the Holy Spirit’s power and presence. He saw it as a supernatural ability to speak in languages that one had not learned, and as a sign of God’s grace and mercy at work in the world.
However, Luther also recognized that the gift of tongues could be misused or misunderstood. He cautioned against those who sought after the gift of tongues for their own glory, or who used it as a way to elevate themselves above others in the Church.
Luther also believed that the gift of tongues was not necessary for salvation or for the Christian life. He saw it as one of many gifts that God could give to His people, but not as a requirement for faith or obedience.

John Wesley on the Spiritual Gift of Tongues

John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, believed in the spiritual gift of tongues as a genuine manifestation of the Holy Spirit’s power and presence in the world.
Wesley saw the gift of tongues as a supernatural ability to speak in languages that one had not learned, and as a sign of God’s grace and mercy at work in the world. He believed that this gift could serve a variety of purposes, including as a means of evangelism and as a way of edifying the Church. He also emphasized the need for discernment in the use of spiritual gifts, and for the exercise of these gifts in a way that would build up the Church and advance the Gospel.
Wesley encouraged believers to pray for the gift of tongues, but also to approach it with humility and discernment, and to use it in a way that would glorify God and benefit His people.

The Catholic Church on the Spiritual Gift of Tongues

In the Catholic Church, the spiritual gift of tongues is considered to be one of the charismatic gifts of the Holy Spirit, along with gifts such as healing, miracles, and prophecy.
According to Catholic teaching, the gift of tongues is a supernatural ability given by the Holy Spirit to certain individuals for the purpose of building up the Church and advancing the Gospel. The gift of tongues is seen as a means of praising and worshiping God in a way that transcends human language and understanding, and as a way of edifying the Church and bringing others to faith.
The Catholic Church recognizes that the gift of tongues can take many different forms, including the ability to speak in languages that one has not learned, the ability to speak in a spiritual language that is not understood by others, and the ability to interpret or translate spiritual language into human language.

He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.

The title of this thread is a little misleading. It says there is no gift of tongues, but the article says the gift of tongues isn't what some people think it is.
It doesn't deny there was a gift of tongues.

1Cor 12:4; Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit.
1Cor 12:10; and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.

1Cor 12:30; All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they?

Apparently the gift of tongues is not a gift everyone has.

1Cor 13:1; If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

The article makes several wrong assumptions,.
Yes, on the "first" day of Pentecost, people spoke in Earthly languages. But Paul says there is a language of angels.
The second wrong assumption is that there was only one day of Pentecost ( Acts 2:1; ) but there are at least two others mentioned by Paul several years later ( Acts 20:16; 1Cor 16:8; ). It was likely an annual festival
taking the place of the end of the passover. Pente = 50, The day of Pentecost happened 50 days after Jesus was crucified on the first day of the passover.

Another wrong assumption in the article is that people only spoke in tongues on the day of Pentecost.
But at least 3 others groups of people spoke in tongues over the next two decades covered in Acts.

Cornelius and his family ( who were Gentiles )
Acts 10:45 All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.
Acts 10:46 For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered,

The disciples at Ephesus ( who could have been Gentiles )
Acts 19:5; When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Acts 19:6; And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying.
Acts 19:7; There were in all about twelve men.

and of course Paul himself, who wasn't in the upper room in Acts 2.
1Cor 14:18; I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all;

This is the problem with using some web page to prove a doctrine, rather than the Bible itself.

The title is written on purpose and is truth. You would have known why the title was written if you had PROPERLY read the article (so written seeing that you falsely accuse me of things I never said). But alas, we live in a generation with people who love to answer matters before they hear it. Wherefore it is written:

He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.

And why do you falsely accuse me things I have never said? Are you that much in love with arguing with yourself, sir? It is written:

Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

And again:

He that uttereth a slander, is a fool.

— (1 Corinthians 14:13).

Amen.

Wisdom is too high for a fool.

Matt 5:22; "But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.

My confused and foolish friend, I do not regard your perverted “bible” which your father has deceived you with. Furthermore, you and mr. Mikha'el are not my brethren. Because my mother and my brethren are those which hear the word of God, and do it.

He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.

I have given you the Word of God but you have cast it behind your back and and judge yourself unworthy of everlasting life. Our conversation comes therefore to an end here.

As it is written:

A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject; knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.

Your blood be upon your own head; I am clean.

Boring - (¬_¬)

The children of Rome have always been in denial.

The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
Then why are you posting a denial of the gospel preached by Jesus and the apostles ??

Then why are you posting a denial of the gospel preached by Jesus and the apostles ??
As Jesus Christ said to your fathers;

Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Fill thou up then the measure of thy fathers, child of the devil.

If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha. Woe unto thee!

Dear @Rejoice evermore.
Well people are not rejoicing with the method you are using here that's for sure!!!

The fact that you were willing to mislead in order to start this thread and justify doing so does not speak well concerning you. Clearly you did not want communication, but only to make a point and broach no rebuttal, and so the accusatory/condemning nature of your replies to others.

If communication is not what you wanted to do, then it might be best if you move along to something/somewhere else.

Nick, I am not here to flatter men. Because a man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his feet.

The word of God is not up for debate by sinners who despise it. Rest assured, they will give account for their ungodly ways and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.

With all due respect, but I care not if this offends you or if you find this “unloving”. It is written that charity rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth. And may God forgive your slander. Amen.

As the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: so shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it, saith the LORD.

But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
