Maybe I just have a hard time accepting it? I’m not really sure
Accepting it requires faith. And thankfully (according to Romans 12:3) God has given each of us a “measure of faith” that is sufficient to bring us to His saving grace. So that faith to accept, believe, and receive is in you already…you may just have to dig a bit deeper to find it. Sometimes it requires that our “outer shell”…..those walls of resistance…be broken down first. Those walls can be built up by pride, fear, uncertainty, or even bitterness because of past experiences. Repenting, and bearing all of those things openly before God will cause those walls of resistance to fall.
Many will tell you that the word “repent” means to “turn away”…as in turning away from your sinful ways. That’s certainly part of it. But it’s also more. “Repent” is a translation of the Greek word “
Metanoeo” which literally means “to change one’s mind.” So, to repent means to actually change your mind about sin, and about how our sinful ways are an offense to God. Once this true repentance happens, it allows us to be emptied and will open a “doorway” for the Holy Spirit to enter and begin the work of “re-making” us.
God wants us to be completely surrendered to Him….an “empty vessel” that He can pour His Holy Spirit into.
So what should we do then? First, as
@Rhema pointed out, go to God’s Word…..Matthew 5 and 6 is a great place to start….Jesus’ sermon on the mount. Hold ourselves, our hearts, our thoughts and actions, up to what Jesus is teaching His disciples they should be. Pray for God to “search our hearts”, to “examine our every thought,” to “see if there is any wicked way in us.” At that point, when we come face-to-face with our shortcomings….and realize that it was OUR sins that helped nail Jesus to the cross…in that sobering moment…hopefully we will come to true repentance. Then we can pray for forgiveness and ask Jesus to take us in….to fill us with the Holy Spirit!
I tell you, in the same way, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels over one sinner who repents.” -Luke 15:10
What a beautiful and miraculous thing….being born again. It is, without doubt….the greatest of all miracles. A transformed heart…..a soul saved. It causes the Angels in Heaven to rejoice!
