Proverbs 21 Select Verses ESV
6 The getting of treasures by a lying tongue
is a fleeting vapor and a snare of death.
7 The violence of the wicked will sweep them away,
because they refuse to do what is just.
8 The way of the guilty is crooked,
but the conduct of the pure is upright.
13 Whoever closes his ear to the cry of the poor
will himself call out and not be answered.
20 Precious treasure and oil are in a wise man's dwelling,
but a foolish man devours it.
30 No wisdom, no understanding, no counsel
can avail against the Lord.
31 The horse is made ready for the day of battle,
but the victory belongs to the Lord.
There are many people who speak lies, by habit, deliberately, in order to get whatever “treasure” it is that they desire. And a treasure doesn’t have to do with material wealth at all, although it certainly may. But it can be anything that they treasure, that they hold dear to their hearts, or that has a strong hold on their minds and hearts, like a sinful addiction, for example. Such a treasure can be anything that might be regarded as an idol which is served and worshiped in place of and/or above God and true worship of him.
Now this kind of behavior is underhanded, it is deceitful, it is gutless, wretched, lacking in true courage, and it is despicable. And it is usually performed behind closed doors or in the dark where no one else can see what is really going on. People who behave in this manner are living according to their sinful flesh, and not according to the Word of God and to his instructions for us who profess faith in Jesus Christ. And some of these people are those who profess faith in the Lord Jesus and in his word.
This kind of behavior is predominant in those who are addicted to sexual sin in its various forms and in those who are addicted to certain drugs and/or to alcohol or gambling, and the like. It is not uncommon for the addicted to try to keep their addiction a secret, and to lie about it as a coverup in hoping that they will not be discovered and that the truth will not come out. And they will even lie in advance about what they are doing in the dark or behind closed doors to try to give a false impression of what is really taking place.
But they continue in their addictive behaviors, and in their lies and their coverups and their masks that they put on because they are gutless and they lack the courage to be honest and to seek help. They do not work decently at being delivered from their addiction, in the power of God, via Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins on that cross, via their submission to the Lord and their cooperation with him in his work of grace, which he would like to work in their lives if only they were willing and would surrender to him.
And they are also those who lack genuine love for other humans, for they will use and abuse others in order to get what they want. They can be malicious, spiteful, vicious, and hostile toward anyone who would oppose them and their behaviors, or who might try to help them to freedom. And, again, this isn’t just about people who make no professions of faith in Jesus Christ, but this is presently epidemic among many who say that they believe in Jesus and who believe they are forgiven and on their way to heaven.
But God has a day of judgment in which the secrets of people’s hearts will be exposed for what they are and when he will judge all of us according to our deeds. And for those who make sinful addiction their idol, who make sin their practice, and for whom righteous, godly, moral, upright, and honest living, in walks of obedience to the Lord, are not their practice, they will face the wrath of God, and they will not gain entry into eternal life with God. And some of that judgment on their lives could come sooner than later.

Your bond is broken with your Lord and Savior
And your testimony is separate from Him.
Your words not matching your actions today.
Repent of your sin and bow down and pray.
Live what you testify in truth always.
Purity’s lacking in your life and witness,
For you profess one thing, but other you do.
Not moral, spiritual. Still of the flesh.
Not living in truth to what you confess.
Lying about it puts you in a mess.
Living a lie is your practice, ‘tis true of you.
Masquerade righteousness – none of it true.
Your heart is not given to your Lord God.
Because of how you live, you are a fraud.
Turn from your sin and give your life to God.
