Three Curtains Poll

You are a contestant on a game show. There are three curtains. Behind one of the curtains is a new car. You are asked to choose one of the curtains. Lets say that you choose curtain #1. The host of the show - who knows where the car is so as not to end the game prematurely - opens curtain #3 and of course there is no car behind it. The host now gives you a choice. You can stay with curtain #1 or you can change your choice to curtain #2. The question now is: would it be to your advantage to stay with curtain #1, or would it be to your advantage to change to curtain #2 or would there be no advantage either way?

Greetings,
we are called to wait upon the LORD.
Our hope is in Him.
Should we change our mind or should we not grow weary in doing well and run the race?
Keep the Faith, nothing wavering, confident in hope, knowing that He Who promised is Faithful.

Bless you ....><>

Greetings @rstrats

I have no personal interest in this type of thing so I haven't replied and find the poll rather strange to say the least

Perhaps if you could explain what purpose it has on a Christian forum you may get some replies?

Because the host does not want to lose the car.
If the host showed any need to try and change my mind, I would stay with curtain 1.
If the host does not try to entice me to change my mind, I would change to curtain 2.

With 3 choices, you have 33% percent chance of getting the car. But with the disposition of curtain 3 being revealed before your final choice, the chance to get the curtain with the car behind it moves up to 50% with either curtain 1 or two now the only viable option if the desired outcome to is get the car and it is still behind one of the 2 curtains. Simple math, too simple for an adult, so its a "strange" simple little game that you are playing and since no one here wanted to play, you get impatient, more strange. Whats strange about it? Its as strange as me asking if 2+2 = 4. Of course it does, and normally when a question is overly simple, the questioner is trying to pull a trick on the answerer. So, whats your silly game and why are you impatient that we dont want to play?

Brad Huber,

Actually the simple math shows that it would be to your advantage to switch to curtain #2 because that would change your chance from 1/3 to 2/3.

Look at it this way: What if after your initial pick of curtain #1 the host told you that you could stay with #1 or switch to BOTH #2 and #3? My guess is that you would switch so that you could look behind both curtains in spite of the fact that you KNOW that at least one of the curtains does not have a car behind it. Lets say that the first curtain that you open is #3 and you find that there is no car behind it. You now get to open curtain # 2, giving you 2 chances. What is the difference if you open curtain #3 or the host opens curtain #3 for you? Either way, you get to look behind curtain # 2.

You can also think of it as two areas. Area "A" contains curtain #1 and area "B" contains curtains #2 and #3. There is a 1/3rd chance that the car is in area "A" and a 2/3rds chance that it is in area "B". Before opening any curtains you KNOW that at least one of the curtains in area "B" doesn't have the car behind it. So by opening a curtain in area "B" that doesn't have a car behind it doesn't change the 2/3rds odds that area "B" still has a car in it. So why wouldn't you want to change to area "B"?

You are still thinking in thirds when its obviously not thirds any longer, Why do you think it should be thirds when there are only TWO real choices to achieve the desired result. Its a flaw in your logic, that you consider it to still be thirds.

Brad Huber,

re: " Why do you think it should be thirds when there are only TWO real choices to achieve the desired result."

I'll explain. Let's place the curtains into two areas where area "A" contains curtain #1 and area "B" contains curtains #2 and #3. Now, if after your initial selection of curtain #1 and before any curtains are opened, the host tells you that you can change your choice to both of the curtains in area "B", would you make that change - yes or no? And note that he is not trying to influence you in any way.

You are welcome to think it clever and correct in your assertion, yet my statement is still true and logically sound. Its really not a fun exchange of words or ideas. Bye!

Brad Huber,
re: "Bye!"

Probably a good idea, since for some reason you can't see that it is better to have 2 curtains to look behind as opposed to having only 1 curtain to look behind.

Fragrant Grace,

re: "I...find the poll rather strange to say the least."

What is it that you find strange?

re: "Perhaps if you could explain what purpose it has on a Christian forum..."

The same purpose it has on any "Entertainment" category forum - for an exercise of one's logical thinking capabilities.
