Tongues do you speak them??

Mark 16
15. And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.
16. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
17. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In My name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues;
18. they will pick up snakes with their hands, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not harm them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will be made well.”

Our Lord is giving the us instructions to preach the gospel to all the world, and this is happening every day, Bibles are being translated to new languages Christians are going to far off lands risking there lives, and we all agree that this is what the word of God tells us to do.

So why do some believe that message of preaching the gospel is for today, but then they will say Tongues is no longer ??

why is only part of this message for today and not the whole message??

1Cor 12:8; For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit;
1Cor 12:9; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
1Cor 12:10; and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.
1Cor 12:11; But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.

Interestingly enough, this was written to the Corinthians, ( Gentiles ).

1Cor 12:27; Now you are Christ's body, and individually members of it.
1Cor 12:28; And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues.
1Cor 12:29; All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of miracles, are they?

I do believe the gifts are still active, and I have spoken in tongues. still...

1Cor 12:30; All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they?

1Cor 14:2; For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries.
1Cor 14:3; But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation.
1Cor 14:4; One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church.

..and while speaking in tongues is a important gift for the church, I think some churches forget this passage.

1Cor 14:5; Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying.
1Cor 14:6; But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what will I profit you unless I speak to you either by way of revelation or of knowledge or of prophecy or of teaching?

Speaking in tongues is fine, but what good is it unless it is interpreted, and a prophecy/teaching/revelation is given?

1Cor 14:7; Yet even lifeless things, either flute or harp, in producing a sound, if they do not produce a distinction in the tones, how will it be known what is played on the flute or on the harp?
1Cor 14:8; For if the bugle produces an indistinct sound, who will prepare himself for battle?
1Cor 14:9; So also you, unless you utter by the tongue speech that is clear, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air.
1Cor 14:10; There are, perhaps, a great many kinds of languages in the world, and no kind is without meaning.
1Cor 14:11; If then I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be to the one who speaks a barbarian, and the one who speaks will be a barbarian to me.
1Cor 14:12; So also you, since you are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek to abound for the edification of the church.
1Cor 14:13; Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.

I have been in some churches where there is a lot of speaking in tongues going on. But very little interpretation, prophecy or edification for the church.
I serious wonder if this is what God wants, people speaking in tongues just for the sake of speaking in tongues. Read 14:6-12 again, and see if that's correct.

1Cor 14:18; I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all;
1Cor 14:19; however, in the church I desire to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.
1Cor 14:20; Brethren, do not be children in your thinking; yet in evil be infants, but in your thinking be mature.

1Cor 14:22; So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe.
1Cor 14:23; Therefore if the whole church assembles together and all speak in tongues, and ungifted men or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad?

The other thing I wonder about, it says tongues are a sign for unbelievers. If a church is full of saved saints, and everyone is a believer, then why is so much speaking in tongues going on?

Another point I would like to make here, is that the gifts are supernatural. Out of the ordinary things. Some churches these days have taken the power out of the gifts.
They have de-spiritualized them. For example, even non-Christians, non-believers can speak multiple languages. Even non-Christians can be doctors and surgeons.

It seems some churches have taken these passages to mean, "some have the gift of healing: that means they are doctors. "some have the gift of tongues"; that means they have studied foreign languages.
No, that isn't what these passages mean. It means you have a supernatural power. Something you didn't learn in school from men.

For final note here for those who doubt the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Be very very careful what you say about people using the gifts of the Spirit. If you have doubts, fine.
But there are some preachers, who are preaching that the gifts of the Spirit are demonic. Casting out demons can only be done by the Spirit, you can't do it by your own power. ( Acts 19:14-16; )

But my point here is, the Pharisees accused Jesus of doing things by the power of Satan, Jesus told them no it was by the power of God. In the very next verse He says...

Matt 12:31; "Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven.
Matt 12:32; "Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.

Why did Jesus say this to them?

Mark 3:28; "Truly I say to you, all sins shall be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter;
Mark 3:29; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin"—
Mark 3:30; because they were saying, "He has an unclean spirit."

Be careful of accusing Christians of doing things by the power of Satan.

Passing on the Spiritual gifts by the laying on of hands.

Matt 19:13; Then some children were brought to Him so that He might lay His hands on them and pray; and the disciples rebuked them.
Matt 19:14; But Jesus said, "Let the children alone, and do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."
Matt 19:15; After laying His hands on them, He departed from there.

Why did Jesus need to touch these children? He was able to heal some people from miles away, without touching them.

Mark 6:4; Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household."
Mark 6:5; And He could do no miracle there except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.
Mark 6:6; And He wondered at their unbelief. And He was going around the villages teaching.

Acts 6:5; The statement found approval with the whole congregation; and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch.
Acts 6:6; And these they brought before the apostles; and after praying, they laid their hands on them.
Acts 6:7; The word of God kept on spreading; and the number of the disciples continued to increase greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were becoming obedient to the faith.

Acts 8:14; Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them Peter and John,

Acts 8:16; For He had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Acts 8:17; Then they began laying their hands on them, and they were receiving the Holy Spirit.

Acts 8:18; Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was bestowed through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money,
Acts 8:19; saying, "Give this authority to me as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit."

Acts 9:12; and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him, so that he might regain his sight."
Acts 9:17; So Ananias departed and entered the house, and after laying his hands on him said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit."

Acts 13:3; Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.
Acts 13:4; So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia and from there they sailed to Cyprus.

Acts 19:4; Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus."
Acts 19:5; When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Acts 19:6; And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying.

Heb 6:1; Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,
Heb 6:2; of instruction about washings and laying on of hands, and the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment.
Heb 6:3; And this we will do, if God permits.

1Tim 4:14; Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the presbytery.

Now, to be fair it isn't mentioned in every single instance of someone receiving the Holy Spirit, but many times, it says people did receive the Holy Spirit because someone who already had it laid hands on them.
There are some churches that believe unless someone who has been baptized in the Holy Spirit lays hands on you, you can't receive the Holy Spirit.

... and you can't have te gift of speaking in tongues, unless you have been baptized in the Holy Spirit... ( how's that for a long way around, to save the subject of this thread! )

No. But I can whistle in every language on earth.

No need for speaking in another language today. God has his people in every country.

James was not speaking of works for salvation.
But rather,the producing of the fruit of the spirit. Those are the works

cant say that I ever had, seems like a great subject to look into, I love cross referencing the OT and NT one of my favorite things. I will say I have had many people lay hands on me hoping to receive the gift but have not yet.
