Too Busy! - November 25, 2005
Boy has it been a crazy week. I've been in and out of a couple of different states. I have eleven speaking engagements in the next ten weeks, so it's not looking to let up. I would whine, but there aren't too many who would feel sorry for me. Everybody else is busy, too!
Just in case there's anyone who's not sure, I've made up a list of the TOP TEN SIGNS YOU'RE TOO BUSY:10. You get up before you went to bed.9. You remember dropping your kids off at soccer practice last Thursday, but you can't remember ever picking them up.8. You decide to call Clones-R-Us.7. You're thinking about how your family had a home-cooked meal just the other day, but then remember it was during the Reagan administration.6. You think your state flower should be the coffee bean.5. You bump into your oldest son in the family room and suddenly realize he's grown a full beard.4. Burger King has offered you a spot on their royal court.3. You finally pick up your clothes from the cleaners only to find they went out of style- in the 80s.2. It's been so long since you cleaned the refrigerator that you're pretty sure you heard that Chinese food in there singing.1. (And this one's just for us gals) You decide to just shrug off the fur on your legs and call it winter insulation.
But here's the good news: even the busiest life can be full of peace- even rest. Peace isn't about the calendar. Rest isn't always sitting on the sofa with your feet up. It's a heart thing. In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus says, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." (NIV)
What is it we want when we're burdened with busyness? Rest! But Jesus speaks of a rest that's not really about getting rid of busyness. He gives rest that's a soul rest- no matter what's on the Day-Timer.
How do we rest in Christ? We listen to Him, believe Him, trust Him and do what He says. When we do, guess what we find. Peace! God's Word says to "Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts." (Colossians 3:15, NIV) And I can say without reservation- busy or not so busy- peace rules!
