He turns a wilderness into pools of water, And dry land into watersprings. Psalm 107:35

Today's passage, Psalm 107:33-38, offers two options to all men at all times. The choices aren't between "okay" and "better." They're the difference between "death" and "life." Like the preceding disasters, the psalmist engages the imagination with real-life scenes.

In the first series, in verses 33-34, the psalmist presents fast-motion scenes of ecological disasters in the making. Such scenes evoke the judgments against Sodom and Gomorrah during the days of Abraham, and against Israel when God's people rebelled greatly against the Lord during the days of Elijah.

In the second series of real-life scenes, the psalmist reverses everything. Ecological disasters are replaced with nature and humanity prospering because of the Lord's blessings. Such scenes evoke the prosperity seen by Joshua, Caleb, and ten other spies when they explored the Promised Land, and the even greater prosperity enjoyed when Israel followed the Lord in the days of David and Solomon.

So, what's the difference between real-life scenes of "death" and "life"? Again, it comes down to two options. Do you humble yourself before the Lord, love Him wholeheartedly, and do what He says? Or do you go your own way, blame God when everything goes wrong, and give up on faith?

Prayer: Lord I take You at Your Word and choose Your way to life!
