Jesus told them, "In this world the kings and great men lord it over their people, yet they are called 'friends of the people.' But among you it will be different. Those who are the greatest among you should take the lowest rank, and the leader should be like a servant. Who is more important, the one who sits at the table or the one who serves? The one who sits at the table, of course. But not here! For I am among you as one who serves. Luke 22:25-27 NLT
The word servant isn’t held in as high of regard as it should be these days. When many people hear that word, they think of someone who is of lower rank, someone who is tasked with the most menial and humbling responsibilities.
Jesus, however, has a much different take on what it really means to be a servant. He told His followers that the one who wants to be greatest should humbly serve. In the words of the apostle Paul, “serve one another humbly in love” (Galatians 5:13).
While Jesus was on earth, He set the perfect example of a servant. Now, we should take His example to heart and take on the role of a humble, loving servant.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, You set the perfect example of taking the role of a lowly servant. May I always purpose to follow Your example and make myself a servant above all things.
