Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 NKJV
Romans 15 establishes reasons for our hope and confidence as Christians. In context, Paul was talking to Roman Jews about the validity of salvation in Christ for both Jews and Gentiles. His argument holds principles that impact how we are to live in this world: the humility of Christ, who went low to identify with us and bear our burdens; the reliability of scripture, God’s words given and fulfilled through the ages to teach us to endure; and the power of the Holy Spirit filling us so that we can love others well, seeking their highest good just as Jesus seeks ours.
Verse 13 is the battery that charges our hope. Trusting God enough to humble ourselves brings the endurance we need to keep hoping for His kingdom to come. We have our role in God’s bigger story, and when Jesus’ attitude becomes ours—a work of the Spirit in us over time—we see the value of unity with other believers. We may not agree on some of the details of the Christian life, but if we are bound by the same core beliefs, we will glorify God in this hurting world.
Prayer: Jesus, You became God’s servant to save the world and bring unity with the Father. Fill me with Your Spirit so I can do the same work in my corner of it.
