Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, And in the hidden [part] You will make me to know wisdom. Psalm 51:6 NKJV
The key to David’s psalm of repentance is that he acknowledges that no one is more offended by his sin than God. Others were certainly affected; that’s always the case. But as David noted in Psalm 51:4, Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done [this] evil in Your sight--That You may be found just when You speak, [And] blameless when You judge.
Forgiveness is hard because it puts the power to make things right in the hands of the offended party. Asking for it means accepting the consequences of the wrong we’ve done. To extend forgiveness is to take the offense on our own shoulders—something we have to do for our own sake so we don’t become bitter from hanging on to the wrong done to us.
The good news is that God has gone to extensive lengths to make things right between us and Him. When He sits as King of our hearts and His truth is saturated throughout our being, we know that His grace is greater than any sin. We can confess with confidence that He will forgive us, and we can take the consequences in stride.
Prayer: Merciful Lord, I confess my sins to You. Forgive me. Work out Your truth in my heart in a deep and true way that changes me to be more like Jesus.
