“To sum up, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit; not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing. For,
“The one who desires life, to love and see good days,
Must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.
He must turn away from evil and do good;
He must seek peace and pursue it.
For the eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous,
And His ears attend to their prayer,
But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” (1 Peter 3:8-12 NASB’95)
These are instructions to Christians, to the body of believers in Jesus Christ, his church. And this is following some instructions to husbands and wives. All of us who are of genuine walks of faith in the Lord Jesus are to be living godly, morally pure, upright, honest, faithful and obedient lives to God, in the power and wisdom of God, by his grace. How we live is evidence of whether or not our faith in Jesus is of God or if it is of the flesh of man.
Now all of this falls under the instructions given to us by God, which are of God, and which align with God’s will and purpose for our lives. So we are not to interpret any of these instructions in the light of humanistic ideology and philosophy. For example, to be “harmonious” will never fit with human thinking and reasoning, and must never compromise biblical faith and practice nor God’s moral laws for how we are to live as followers of Christ.
“Harmonious” has to agree with and be in line with the Scriptures and what they teach. So first and foremost we must be living in harmony with our Lord, in walking in obedience to his commands, and in daily putting sin to death in our lives so that we can serve our Lord in doing his will. So we must never compromise the message of the gospel (in context) in order to get along with other people, no matter who they are. Truth must rule!
Same applies with the rest of these qualities of behavior towards others, or more specifically toward our fellow Christians. We should not sympathize with people living in sin, giving them excuses to continue in sin so that they do not turn from their sins and so that they do not obey God. And being kind to others is not telling them lies to make them feel good while they continue in their sins. Lies are never kind! Truth, spoken in love, is kind.
And don’t accept the accusation against yourselves that you are being unkind and unsympathetic and prideful just because you speak the truth of the gospel, and because you warn the people against walking in sin, and you call them to repentance and to walks of obedience to the Lord Jesus. And don’t accept an accusation of being judgmental because you teach that if we continue living in sin, and not in walks of obedience to our Lord, that we will not inherit eternal life with God. For Jesus taught that (Luke 9:23-26).
We can live in harmony with others who are living in harmony with God, and we can live in harmony with others to the point to where they disagree with the Scriptures, and then we must side with the Scriptures. And we can be humble in spirit, and we can be sympathetic and kindhearted as long as none of those things involve us compromising truth and righteousness and the gospel message that Jesus taught, and that his New Testament apostles taught (in context), which require death to sin and obedience to God.
For, if we want to have life in the Spirit, salvation from sin, and heaven as our eternal destiny, we must deny self, die daily to sin (in practice), and follow our Lord Jesus in walks of obedience to his commands. Lying should no longer be our practice. Now we should be truth tellers. Evil doing of any kind should be put to death, and now we should do the good God commands that we must do. And the peace we are to pursue is peace with God which comes about when we yield our lives over to his control and we obey him.
And “the righteous” are all those who practice the righteousness of God, for whom righteous living is their practice, in the power of God, and not in the flesh of man. And to be “righteous” is to be approved by God which involves us living in conformity to God’s standard of righteousness, according to his expressed will and purpose for our lives, which we can read about all throughout the Scriptures, but especially in the New Testament. This means we are living holy, upright, honest, faithful, morally pure lives to his glory.
And as I have said many times before, this does not mean that we will be absolutely perfect in every way, for we still live in flesh bodies, and we are still clay in the hands of the Potter being molded into his likeness, if we are willing and obedient. But where God draws the line between the righteous and the unrighteous has everything to do with our walks of faith. If we are walking in obedience to God and not in sin, we are the righteous. But if sin is our practice, and not obedience to God, we are the unrighteous.
For Jesus gave his life up for us on that cross to deliver us out of our slavery to sin so that we will now serve him with our lives in walks of obedience to his commands, and in surrender to his will and purpose for our lives. And to love God is to obey him. So if obedience to God is not our practice, we do not love God, we do not know God, we are not born of God, but we are still of the devil, according to the Word of God. And that means that we do not have salvation from sin and we will not inherit eternal life with God.

The Lord’s Anointed

Based off Isaiah 61
The Spirit of the Sov’reign Lord on me;
Anointed to preach the Good News;
Sent me to bind up the brokenhearted;
Proclaim freedom for the captives.
He sent me to preach release for pris’ners
Who are walking in sin’s darkness;
Proclaim God’s grace to all men who’ll listen;
And tell them about God’s judgments;
Comfort all who mourn;
Give crowns of beauty;
Oil of gladness and thanksgiving.
They will be called oaks of God’s righteousness,
A planting of our Savior, God,
For the display of our Lord’s splendor, and
They will rebuild God’s holy church.
God will renew them, and will restore them,
And you’ll be called priests of the Lord.
You will be ministers of our God, and
You will rejoice in salvation.
The Lord loves justice;
He is faithful to
Reward those who are seeking Him.
I delight greatly in the Lord;
My soul rejoices in my Savior, God.
He has clothed me with His salvation,
And in a robe of His righteousness.
He has given me priestly garments to wear,
As the bride of Jesus Christ.
As the garden of our Lord and Savior,
He causes us to grow in Him.
He makes righteousness,
Praise, and thanksgiving
Spring up before all the nations.
