"Therefore say to the house of Israel, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "Repent, turn away from your idols, and turn your faces away from all your abominations. Ezekiel 14:6 NKJV
Christians today don’t think or speak much about idols or idolatry. To most of us, that’s Old Testament stuff. Besides, we don’t worship actual, literal idols—like people in ancient times did.
Sounds like we have this idolatry thing licked, doesn’t it?
In reality, though, idolatry is as much of a danger for the man of God today as it was in Old Testament times. We may not worship statues or other inanimate objects, but the world offers all kinds of temptations toward idolatry. That is why the apostle John warned, “Dear children, keep yourselves from idols” (1 John 5:21).
What kinds of things do you find yourself tempted to “worship”? Money? Position? Social standing? There’s a long list of things that, in themselves, aren’t sinful. But when we become fixated on them, when we start believing that they can bring us the satisfaction and security we should find in God alone, then they can become idols.
So be careful. Make sure you keep God alone as your object of loving worship.
Prayer: Father God, there are so many things in this world that could become idols to me if I’m not careful. Help me to guard my heart from any form of idolatry and to cleanse my life of those things I’ve held in a higher place than I should.
