Help us, O God of our salvation! Help us for the glory of your name. Save us and forgive our sins for the honor of your name. Psalm 79:9 NLT
The Bible’s message of salvation begins with the terrible truth that each and every one of us is a sinner in need of forgiveness. The apostle Paul put it this way: “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Furthermore, the Bible teaches that no one deserves God’s forgiveness and that we are all deserving of eternal condemnation.
Now for the good news.
God has freely and generously offered sinners forgiveness and mercy, not because we deserve it but because He is a loving, merciful God who forgives “for the honor of (His) name.”
We have nothing to offer God except our extended empty hands, but because of His love and mercy, we can confidently ask Him to forgive our sins, knowing that He is “faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
Are you in need of God’s forgiveness today? If so, take heart, for God not only can forgive you—He wants to.
Prayer: Lord God, I know I don’t deserve Your forgiveness or mercy. But You extend forgiveness to me simply because it’s in Your amazingly loving and merciful nature to do so. Thank You for loving and forgiving a sinner like me.
