"However the LORD God of Israel chose me above all the house of my father to be king over Israel forever, for He has chosen Judah [to be] the ruler. And of the house of Judah, the house of my father, and among the sons of my father, He was pleased with me to make [me] king over all Israel. "And of all my sons (for the LORD has given me many sons) He has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel. 1 Chronicles 28:4-5 NKJV

Here’s a little Bible quiz for you: What is unusual about all of the leaders David mentions in today’s scripture?

Answer: None of them were firstborn sons, breaking the custom of their time and place.

David himself was the last of eight sons of Jesse, yet he was the one God chose to be king of Israel (1 Samuel 16). David’s tribe was God’s choice for prominence in Israel, yet Judah had been the fourth of Jacob’s twelve sons (Genesis 29). And David’s God-ordained successor, Solomon, was at least the seventh of the king’s sons (1 Chronicles 3).

God is never bound by conventional wisdom—He often turns human expectation on its head, choosing “the weak things of the world to shame the strong” (1 Corinthians 1:27). If you’re not the most talented, smartest, wealthiest, best-looking—or even “most spiritual”—guy you know, that’s okay. If you’re simply willing, God can use you for good.

Prayer: Lord, here I am. Live Your life through me!
