Unforgivable sins

Matthew 12:30-32
30Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. 31Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come

Coming from another thread I started about this topic...

"What is the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit?"

The case of "blasphemy against the Spirit" in the New Testament is mentioned in Mark 3:22-30 and in Matthew 12:22-32. The term blasphemy may be generally defined as "defiant irreverence." We would apply the term to such sins as cursing God, or willfully degrading things relating to God. It is also attributing some evil to God, or denying Him some good that we should attribute to Him. This case of blasphemy, however, is a specific one, called "THE blasphemy against the Holy Spirit" in Matthew 12:31. In Matthew 12:31-32, the Pharisees, having witnessed irrefutable proof that Jesus was working miracles in the power of the Holy Spirit, claimed instead that the Lord was possessed by the demon "Beelzebub" (Matthew 12:24). Now notice that in Mark 3:30 Jesus is very specific about what exactly they did to commit "the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit."

This blasphemy has to do with someone accusing Jesus Christ of being demon-possessed instead of Spirit-filled. There are other ways to blaspheme the Holy Spirit, but this was "THE" unpardonable blasphemy. As a result, the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit cannot be duplicated today. Jesus Christ is not on earth. but seated at the right Hand of God. No one can witness Jesus Christ performing a miracle and then attribute that power to Satan instead of the Spirit. Although there is no blasphemy of the Spirit today, we should always keep in mind there is an unpardonable state of existence--the state of continued unbelief. There is no pardon for a person who dies in unbelief. Continual rejection of the Holy Spirit’s promptings to trust in Jesus Christ is the unpardonable blasphemy. Remember what is stated in John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have eternal life." The only condition when someone would have no forgiveness is if that someone is not among the "whoever believes in Him."

blasphemy of the Holy Spirit or the unpardonable sin is found in John 16: 9. It’s the sin of unbelief, specifically rejecting Jesus as Lord. Its states that the Holy Spirit convicts of sin and it specifically is talking about the sin of not confessing Jesus as Lord. Unbelief in other areas does not constitute the unpardonable sin, but when the Holy Spirit convicts you and reveals to your heart that you need to make Jesus your Lord and Savior and you reject it, you are in trouble. If you continue to do this and die, you die in Adam (See Romans chapter 5) and you will be lost eternally and stand at the White Throne where you will be judged based on your own works instead of the finished work in Jesus. Not a good place to be.

If you read Hebrews chapter 10 in the Living Bible, it gives a clear picture. Now this is my opinion, but I am persuaded that even though the Living Bible, not the New Living bible, is a translation, they have translated Hebrews 10 properly. Its states, that after coming to the full knowledge of Jesus Christ, that salvation comes through him, and him alone, not works and you reject it, it will be an awful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. In other words, Gods wrath will be on you. I thess 5: 9 tells us that as believers, we will never experience the wrath of God, but if the Holy Spirit reveals to you the fullness of Christ and you do not make the decision to make him your Lord, you will be eternally doomed. In Hebrews 10, it is addressing the Jews who were presented with the truth of Jesus, but due to the pressure the Judiazers were putting on them to mix works with Grace, they rejected Christ because they feared the religious zealots, they were making a grave mistake.

According to the study notes for Mt 12:31 (the Pharisees accuse Jesus of casting out demons by the power of Beelzebub), the unforgiveable sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is the deliberate and consistent attributing of the works of the Holy Spirit to Satan; a stubborn refusal to acknowledge the Spirit's power in Christ.

In my studies, the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit talked about in these scriptures is not narrowed down to this one incident. The crux of the story is the Pharisees rejected Christ even after being shown undeniable proof he was from God. Jesus demonstrated the power of God through his works and yet, the Pharisees rejected him. When Jesus went to the cross, he took the sin of ALL men onto him self. He became sin so that man kind could come to God through him and received this sacrifice and be made clean and whole. A new creation according to II corth 5: 17-21,

I personally do not believe these scriptures are the plumb line for blasphemy. It all boils down to the rejection of Christ, (not the incident) after being shown undeniable proofs that he is from God and is Lord. Romans chapter one really reveals this and so does Peter. He rejected Christ publicly, yet when Jesus came back after the cross he told them to go tell Peter. When Peter saw Jesus he called him Lord. Jesus talked with him, and restored him. It goes to show that if a man has a change of heart he can be restored. Just do not die rejecting Christ and his finished work on the cross.

So true. And also worth pointing out.If your worried about possibly committing this sin,Dont be,you havnt because of the fact that your still repentant and care. The ones who have are the ones who dont care at all and refuse to repent.:lightning

Rejecting Jesus is not always blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. In rejecting Jesus' teachings, the Pharisees were not blaspheming the Holy Spirit (the miracle working Power of God).

The only sin identified in Scripture as unforgiveable is the sin of intentionally and consistently attributing the Holy Spirit's works to Satan (Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.)

Now would this be an example of a Christian who excepted Christ, who keeps on sinning knowing that he is sinning and keeps sinning. If so I am going to hell.

Hey justin you make me sad when you say things like that. Don't let anything put you off in life, don't fret, don't worry, be the best you can be!.

God knows your heart and intentions, we all commit sin, daily.
Do you want to know something cool? Read this:

James 4:17 (NIV)
17Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins.

James 4:17 (The Message)
In fact, if you know the right thing to do and don't do it, that, for you, is evil.

We can gather from that verse that if we know the right thing to do and don't do it, we commit sin, evil deeds. So the main concern is this, make sure you don't do sin you know is bad, for instance, don't commit sin like lusting after a woman, or lie, or anything you clearly know about. I commit sins each day, not that I am proud of them, but I do commit them, I get angry and frustrated at people in my life, I do not treat them like Jesus would inside my mind, I swear at them in my head, I become furious. Even though I know that is wrong and I don't want to do it, I'm working on it, praying about it, asking God to help me.

I think SLE made it quite clear, read what he said again.

I bet you don't do that? Do you? No you don't. You are going to heaven, you are going to meet your friends who are Christians in heaven, you are going to be the best friend to all people.

Grow with God, ask Him to make you mature in your emotions and convictions, you won't go to hell because you commit sin, but try not to do it, pray about your sins, confess them to Jesus, ask Him to forgive you.

All will be well.

I  you.

Justin,

I strongly urge you to get a study Bible and study Romans, chapters 5 thru 7 Take it slow.Study the study notes as you read the text, The Apostle Paul struggled with the very issues you seem to be struggling with.

I agree completely. Especially chapter 7 of Romans. Some people will argue that Paul is writing this chapter from the perspective of a non-Christian, and I assure you that argument is weak at best.

As far as knowingly sinning goes, every Christian still has this nature. Beware any Christian who says that they no longer sin or say they never have sinned. John speaks of this in 1 John 1:8-10

"8. If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us "

:lightbulbConfess Your Sins :lightbulb as far as the verse about the unforgivable sin goes, it happens to be one of my favorites. Not per say because of the unforgivable sin part, but look at the rest of that verse!

"31. Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32. And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come"

This verse implies that people who have spoken blasphemy or hard words or curses or hate against Christ can be forgiven. The friend of sinners is he not? Anything will be forgiven regenerate repentant sinners. Beautiful verse :D
