In that day, says the Lord of hosts, you shall invite each man his neighbor under his own vine and his own fig tree. Zechariah 3:10 AMPC

Christmas carols often include the phrase peace on earth, which comes from Luke 2:14. But what does peace on earth look like?

At the height of Solomon’s kingship, Israel had peace in the land (see 1 Kings 4:25). Peace was spending more time in the garden and less time fighting wars.

Since Solomon, the image of vines and figs has come to represent peace and prosperity. Such peace is provided by the strength of God’s own army. Micah 4:3-4 says, “And He shall judge between many peoples and shall decide for strong nations afar off, and they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree, and none shall make them afraid, for the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken it.”

The peace of God has come to earth in the person of Jesus. When we realize that the battle has already been won, that Jesus leads heaven’s army, we can beat our swords into plowshares and relax in the shade of our gardens.

Prayer: Lord, fill me with the peace that comes from knowing You fight for me.
