so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation. Hebrews 9:28 NKJV
This world will never encourage you to “wait for Jesus.” To pursue money and possessions? Yep. To drink and party and chase after sex? For sure. To lose yourself in every imaginable form of entertainment? Uh-huh. But to wait for Jesus? Not a chance.
This idea of waiting and watching for Jesus’ return, however, appears throughout the New Testament. Besides today’s passage, you’ll find variations on the theme in Matthew, Mark, Luke, Romans, 1 Corinthians, 1 Thessalonians, Titus, and Jude. Some have said that anything God says is important, but if He repeats Himself, you should really pay attention. Jesus is coming back! And, as Christians, we are instructed to keep that promise front of mind.
So how exactly do we “wait” for Jesus? Well, how would you wait for any loved one returning from a long absence? You’d eagerly anticipate that person’s return. You’d prepare yourself, your family, and your home for the big reunion. You’d avoid any distractions that would interfere with the joyful moment you were together again. It’s not rocket science—though you will want to keep your eyes on the skies: “Look, he is coming with the clouds” (Revelation 1:7).
Prayer: Lord Jesus, keep me focused and true as I wait for Your return.
