Waiting - December 21, 2005
"I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning. O Israel, put your hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is unfailing love and with him is full redemption. He himself will redeem Israel from all their sins." Psalm 130:6-8 NIV
It's hard to wait for God to answer prayers. We think God should move on our timetable rather than His. The Psalmist knew the frustration of waiting on God and compared himself to a night watchman who felt his watch would never end. But in spite of our feelings of impatience, the Psalmist urges us to put our hope in the Lord. His unfailing love brings full redemption.
Last year, our daughter and son-in-law purchased their first home. How exciting it was to see the frames go up, the walls, and then the roof. But as so often happens, the project went past deadline. The expected August 15th closing date came and went without completion. The September 1st extension passed and the home still wasn't ready.
It would have been even more frustrating except for an amazing thing. Every time they went by their soon-to-be completed house, something unexpected had been added. After the first missed deadline, they were pleasantly surprised to see a paved driveway. After the September 1st date passed, they rejoiced to see a garage door with an automatic opener. When they questioned the completion date on September 15th, they saw landscapers putting in sod.
You guessed it. When they finally closed on September 30th, the house was much nicer than they had ever anticipated. It was as if God made them wait, but then blessed them for waiting.
Lord, thank you for the blessings you bestow on us. Help us to wait patiently for Your perfect timing.
"Be assured that if God waits longer than you could wish, it is only to make the blessing doubly precious." Andrew Murray
