“Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.” (Romans 8:1-8 NASB1995)
The Lord has been having me use Bible Gateway (on the internet) and their verse of the day most days for the past 8 years, at least as the starting point from where he has me reading each day and then writing down what he is teaching me through the passage of Scripture. But I read and I share the Scriptures in their appropriate context and not usually just the few verses that they supply for the day. And the reason for that is that some verses, like verses 1 and 2, if shared separately from the context, can give people the wrong message. And that is happening so much in today’s world.
In other words, we need to read past just the “verse of the day” to make certain that we are getting the right message. For many people today are being convinced that they are “in Christ” just because they made a profession of faith in Christ. And so they presume that they are no longer under condemnation and that they have been set free from the law of sin and death. And so they presume that all their sins are forgiven and now heaven is guaranteed them for when they die, but without regard to how they are living, as though how they live does not matter for eternity.
But if we read on we learn that God sent his only begotten Son Jesus Christ to die as an offering for sin. And in that offering of his Son he condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who DO NOT WALK according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. And we read in other Scriptures that Jesus gave his life up for us on that cross to put our sins to death with him so that we will now die with Christ to sin and walk in obedience to his commands in holy living, by the Spirit. So to be “in Christ” we are to be those who walk not by the flesh but by the Spirit.
And then it continues with the same message. For if our faith in Jesus Christ is biblical faith, of God, and not of human flesh, and if we truly are “in Christ,” as it is biblically defined throughout the New Testament writings, then our minds are set on the things of the Spirit and not on the things of the flesh. But if our minds are set on the flesh, the result is death, not life eternal with God. For if our minds and actions are set on the flesh, we are thus hostile toward God, for our minds, our hearts, and our behaviors are not in subjection to God and to his commands. So we cannot please God.
“So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” (Romans 8:12-14 NASB1995)
And this pretty much sums it up for us. For what does it look like to live according to the flesh? It means we are living our lives, in conduct, with purpose, to please our flesh, and not to do what pleases God according to the teachings of the Scriptures and his New Covenant commands. Are we living to please God? Or are we living to please our sinful flesh? For if we live to please the flesh, we will die without salvation and we will not inherit eternal life with God. But if by the Spirit we are putting to death the deeds of the body, and we are obeying God, then we will have eternal life with God.
For all who are being led by the Spirit of God are the children of God, not all who only make verbal professions of faith in Jesus Christ. And if we are being led by the Spirit, we are listening to the Spirit’s voice via the written Word of God and via the counsel of God’s Spirit living within us guiding us in the ways that he would have us to go, which must not contradict the will of God for our lives. And we are following in the ways of God according to his commands, so we are obeying our Lord in practice, and we are doing what he has called us to do, and we are no longer making sin our practice.
This is a biblical picture of what it means to be “in Christ” and to not be under condemnation. So if all we do is profess faith in Jesus, but then we go on living according to our flesh, and not according to the Spirit, and sin remains our practice, and not obedience to our Lord’s commands, then we are not “in Christ,” and we do not have salvation from sin nor eternal life with God. And this is not saying that we will never sin again (1 John 2:1-2), but that sin must no longer be our practice. Righteousness, godliness, moral purity, honesty, and faithfulness to God must now be our practice.
