We Have Need of Endurance

“But remember the former days, when, after being enlightened, you endured a great conflict of sufferings, partly by being made a public spectacle through reproaches and tribulations, and partly by becoming sharers with those who were so treated. For you showed sympathy to the prisoners and accepted joyfully the seizure of your property, knowing that you have for yourselves a better possession and a lasting one. Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised.

“For yet in a very little while,
He who is coming will come, and will not delay.
But My righteous one shall live by faith;
And if he shrinks back, My soul has no pleasure in him.
But we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the preserving of the soul.” (Hebrews 10:32-39 NASB1995)

It is entirely possible for a true follower of Christ, who followed the Lord in a sincere walk of obedience to him for a long while, to, at some point, be taken captive by the world and by sinful desire and to be led astray from their pure devotion to the Lord Jesus. If it were not possible we would not have the magnitude of warnings in the Scriptures to the church, the body of Christ, cautioning them against that possibility. So believe this!

For, although we are in Christ, by faith in Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we still live in flesh bodies, and we still have the vulnerability to sin, which is why Jesus taught that we must deny self, take up our cross daily (die daily to sin) and follow him in walks of obedience to his commands. And this is why we are instructed as to what we should do when our enemy Satan is coming against us to take us down (Luke 9:23-26; Ephesians 6:10-20).

If we are not armored up so as to be able to fight off the enemy’s schemes he has cooked up to use against us, and especially if we have one foot in heaven and one in the world, at the same time, we will not survive the onslaught of the enemy, for he has all sorts of “tricks up his sleeves” which he will use to try to trip us up and to get us to fall and to get us to stray from our pure devotion to the Lord. For this is his goal!

So, we need to be very guarded against such things by not “playing with fire,” and by not filling our minds and hearts with the garbage of the world, while Jesus gets last place. For faith in Jesus Christ is a full-time commitment to deny self, put sin to death, by the Spirit, and to walk (in conduct, in practice) in surrender and in obedience to our Lord and to his will and purpose for our lives, in the power of God, by faith in Jesus Christ.

And/or we need to guard our own hearts against allowing the bad treatments of others against us to determine who we are and what course we take and how we respond to being mistreated. For we can be living for the Lord, following him in obedience to his commands, but then come up against persecutions, rejections, and false accusations against ourselves, and have that discourage us to the point to where we give up and give in.

So, the encouragement here is for us to remain steadfast in faith and in walks of obedience to our Lord in holy living, and in following God’s leading in our lives in doing what he has called us to do, despite Satan’s attacks against us, either via distractions or temptations or discouragement related to being hated and persecuted for our walks of faith in obedience to our Lord. We must not throw away our confidence, but we must persevere!

For we have need of endurance, so that when we have done the will of God, we may receive what was promised. Let that sink in! For the Scriptures do not teach a faith which is absent of death to sin and walks of surrender to God in obedience to his commands. God demands that we die to sin and that we obey him in practice as part of believing faith which saves. So, if sin is our practice, and not obedience to God, we don’t have eternal life with God.

So, when God says that his righteous one will live by faith, the faith that he is speaking of is that which comes from God, which is persuaded of God, and which is gifted to us by God, and which is not of our own doing. And God persuades us as to his righteousness and holiness, and of our sinfulness, and of our need to die to sin and to obey his commands, in practice. And faith is shown by what we do, by how we live, so faith = obedience to God.

So, if we shrink back, and we go back to living in sin, and not in obedience to our Lord and to his New Covenant commands, then God has no pleasure in us. So we must repent of our sins and turn back to following the Lord in walks of surrender to him, in obedience to his design and purpose for our lives. And then we must remain there with the faith that comes from God to the preserving of the soul, which dies to sin and obeys God in practice.

As the Deer

By Martin J. Nystrom
Based off Psalm 42:1

As the deer panteth for the water
So my soul longeth after You
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You

You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You
