"Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed [is] willing, but the flesh [is] weak." Matthew 26:41 NKJV
Nine disciples weren’t invited. Jesus asked only three to follow Him and pray that night. Peter, James, and John likely believed they were up to the challenge. They were invited to a private retreat with the Son of God. They would not be denied the stories of being with Him. This was big, important, and a mission they enthusiastically embraced.
They thought they were ready for the challenge, but their best intentions failed. They probably started with prayer, but sleep sent them a more urgent invitation and they accepted.
You might have wanted to follow God closely but somehow get sidetracked too. It may not be sleep while praying (although it’s common), but maybe a quick redirect to Pornography Place, Seductress Street, or Gossip Cul-de-sac.
It’s disheartening to begin strong only to discover far too quickly how weak you really are. It can even make you wonder if following is really worth it. Yet if you spend time evaluating what you know to be true, you might recognize that life isn’t better without Jesus. Walking away sends you back to a place of defeat.
So keep following. It’s worth it!
Prayer: My flesh is weak, Father. You give a man like me Your strength. Thank You for picking me up when I fall.
