Do you ever get so wrapped up in your "busy ness" that your ears just turn off when a child comes up to you and wants to tell you something? Or how about when an adult who is a new believer comes up to you excited with testimony of what its like to be a new Christian? I have. I found myself so involved in ministry or my activities that I was not aware that I was actually so involved with myself. I forget that I am not here to get it all done by myself, nor am I the King. He is!
Father, please forgive me.
Jesus was asked in Matthew 18:1, Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven? He called a little child and had him stand among them. And He said,
(Matt 18:3-6), I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom in heaven. And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.
That really hit home about 5 years ago. I went on a missionary to Belize with ten others to help build a playground for a "temporary" shelter for abused children ages one to seven, waiting to be transferred to a "permanent" shelter. These children had bruises on their legs, cheeks, bags under their eyes, they could not sleep out of fear.
I was out there digging dirt saying to myself, "man, what am I doing here?" God heard me. After 3 hours of digging dirt, I was thinking, "hey, I'm not getting paid, so I'm going to go up and get a soda." While I was up there taking a break I found a rubber ball and started to bounce it while drinking my soda. I turn around and there were 6 children looking at me, smiling with their big puppy eyes. They wanted to play with me. So (growing up playing baseball) I formed a circle and rolled the ball to one of the children and then chased them. All they did was laugh, laugh, and laugh. Thats all we did for 1 hour. I could see it was like a breath of fresh air for them. I couldn't hold back the tears. I could picture Jesus amongst them.
When I got back to digging I lost time and had to catch up. We were creating a playing field and had to level it in 10 days. On the 10th day it was completed, not the playing field, but the time we spent with the children. Then I heard God. He said, "that is what I needed you to do here."
When I got back to San Francisco, I attended service and was getting the mechanics of my guitar ready, sound check, and other stuff. When the kids kind of walk up cautiously to me knowing how busy I always seem to be, they were surprised when I stopped and asked them to come up so I could hug them and let them run their fingers across my guitar strings. Jesus taught me that I too, can be a child and when I take time for children, listening to them, I am actually spending time with Him.
