Six days shall work be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day shall be put to death. Exodus 31:15 ESV
Do you work and play hard but find it hard to rest? Do you feel like you’ll miss something if you take time to rest? Maybe the Israelites were made to work every day while they were in Egypt, so it seemed unnatural to rest one day a week.
You can always find something to fill time. There’s a lawn to mow, a garage to clean, or a car to maintain. But God said to take one day a week—and rest.
Rest invites you to be still and discover the God you’ve avoided while working. It gets aside bustle in favor of blessing. Rest isn’t punishment. It’s not designed to make you feel guilty. It’s not even to make you work harder the other six days.
Enduring a time of rest insists that time with God is more important than the things you want to do. God set the example and rested on the seventh day of creation.
From a practical standpoint, people who don’t take the day of rest are often forced to take days of rest due to illnesses that result from refusing to slow down.
God asks you to rest because it’s good for you, and because it pleases Him.
Prayer: Father, a day of rest is a gift from You. I can’t restore, replenish, or revive if I don’t have downtime. Help me accept Your gift.
