What does courage look like? What pictures come into your mind when you think of courage? If you are like me, the first picture that will come into your mind will be an image of a John Wayne type hero striding boldly into the thick of the battle, his gun drawn and at the ready. Or you may see a police officer tackling and attempting to subdue a suspect in a violent crime investigation. Or you may see a running back take the handoff from his quarterback, charge full steam ahead into a host of the opponent's defenders trying to score the winning touchdown.
However, I can't conjure an image of history's most courageous deed. It was never captured on videotapetape and there was no 11:00 p.m. news broadcast to tell the world about it. How do you portray a scene in ancient Jerusalem where a young Jewish man, beaten nearly to death by Roman soldiers, exhausted, dehydrated, struggles to drag a heavy wooden cross 600 yards from the Roman Government Center (The Praetorium) to Golgotha (The Place of the Skull) where he will die?As well done as Mel Gibson's movie "The Passion of the Christ" was, no movie has ever captured that event with 100%accuracy.
The hero in that scene is Jesus. He is my hero and I want to be just like him when I grow up.
