For as the heavens are high above the earth, [So] great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; Psalm 103:11 NKJV
If perfect love makes fear go away (1 John 4:18), then does it make sense that God can love us and make us afraid at the same time? If His mercy (kindness, love) is given to those who fear Him, maybe there’s another definition for fear when it’s used in Psalm 103:11. There is. To fear God this way means to show awe and reverence. It’s a sign of respect and honor. It’s important to the idea of worship.
This use of this kind of fear might be seen when seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time. You may not literally be afraid of the canyon, but it may take your breath away. The same is true for the first time you see the ocean or Niagara Falls. You’re in awe because it’s something you’ve never encountered and it’s even more impressive than you imagined.
It is possible to actually fear God before you meet Him and then fear (stand in awe of) Him in a whole new way when you believe that His faithfulness can do new and amazing things in your life.
Prayer: You’re welcome to impress me anytime, Father. May I revere Your goodness, stand in awe of Your rescue, and respect Your ability to help.
