What makes up a man?

Genesis 2:7 says “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Man was formed from the dust of the earth, then God breathed His spirit into the man and then man became a living soul.

We are all familiar with ashes to ashes dust to dust because it says in Ecclesiastes 12:7a “Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was.” This was talking about what happens when man die we return back to the dust we were made out of.

Then it goes on to say that in Ecclesiastes 12:7b “and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.” That the breath of life is the spirit in which when we die the spirit returns back to God.

Some people believe that the soul and spirit is the same thing but I have some verses that shows you that there is a difference. The soul is the part of the man that will stand judgment and the part of the body that is eternal. Scriptures denote the difference here is a few 1 Thessalonians 5:23 says “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

Revelation 6:9
When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained.

Revelation 20:4
I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony for Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his image and had not received his mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

In conclusion there is a difference between spirit and soul. It was the souls that John saw in Revelation in heaven under the altar. As it concludes the matter in Ecclesiates where the dust return to the earth and the spirit return to God the soul is the only thing that is left, because it is eternal that is why the word says what can you exchange for your one soul? And the answer is nothing that is why the word could say in Matthew 10:28 “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”
