Whatever God Has Commanded

“Then they answered Joshua, ‘Whatever you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. Just as we fully obeyed Moses, so we will obey you. Only may the Lord your God be with you as he was with Moses. Whoever rebels against your word and does not obey it, whatever you may command them, will be put to death. Only be strong and courageous!’” (Joshua 1:16-18 NIV)

Joshua was supreme commander of the people of God, under the divine will and authority of God, who the people were to obey as though he was God, just like they did with Moses. Many people have seen Joshua as a prefiguring of Jesus Christ, for Joshua led the people out of their wilderness into the Promised Land. And Jesus provided the way for us out of our wilderness of bondage to sin so that we could now serve him in walks of obedience to his commands, and thus inherit eternal life with God (our Promised Land).

So we, as followers of Jesus Christ, are to have the same attitude and the same approach to our supreme commander God – Father, Son Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit – and to no other. Are we to obey our governing authorities? Yes, but with limits. We do not have to obey any human being, no matter who he is, if he demands that we disobey or deny our Lord in any way. If our leaders (in government, in the church, or in households) require that we disobey our Lord and that we do what is sinful, then we can tell them “No.”

But we are required of God to obey him. And his commands to us are written down for us in the New Testament. And if we don’t obey him, and if we do not forsake our sins and walk in his ways and in his truth, we will not enter into our Promised Land, no matter what our lips profess. And the same happened to the majority of the Israelites who wandered in the wilderness, and we are warned in the Scriptures that we are not to be like them, and we are not to follow their example, or we will have the same results.

1 Corinthians 10:1-22; Galatians 5:16-21; Hebrews 3:1-19; Hebrews 4:1-13

Instead, we are to respond to God as these people did in the time of Joshua leading them into the Promised Land. And we are not to just give lip service to our Lord, but literally we are to be those who make obedience to God our practice. We are to do as he commands us, and we are to go wherever he sends us, and we are to say whatever he gives us to say to the people, even knowing that we will be hated, rejected, and cast away as unwanted and as unnecessary by other people, even by some professing Christians.

And just as it was then, all those who rebel against the Lord and against his Word (New Covenant), and who do not obey him and his teachings (New Testament), God will put to death eventually, and they will not enter into God’s eternal rest. They will not have forgiveness and salvation from sin and eternal life with God because they refused to make obedience to God and death to sin their practice. Instead, they served themselves, did what they wanted, continued in their sins, and would not bow to God as Lord.

So, don’t be fooled by those who are teaching that we can just make a profession of faith in Jesus Christ and now all our sins are forgiven, and heaven is now guaranteed us when we die, but regardless of how we live. For faith in Jesus Christ is obedience to his commands, just like it was under the Old Covenant. And refusal to obey the Lord and to forsake our sins still results in eternal death and separation from our Lord. This is what the New Testament Scriptures teach us:

[Matt 7:13-14,21-23; Lu 9:23-26; Jn 10:27-30; Ac 26:18; Rom 2:6-8; Rom 6:1-23; Rom 8:1-14; Rom 12:1-2; 1 Co 6:9-10,19-20; 1 Co 10:1-22; 2 Co 5:10,15,21; Gal 5:16-24; Gal 6:7-8; Eph 2:8-10; Eph 4:17-32; Eph 5:3-6; Col 1:21-23; Col 3:1-17; Tit 2:11-14; Heb 3:1-19; Heb 4:1-13; Heb 10:23-31; Heb 12:1-2; 1 Pet 2:24; 1 Jn 1:5-10; 1 Jn 2:3-6,15-17; 1 Jn 3:4-10]

When I Was Walking

When I was walking along the way,
My Lord was with me, and He did say,
“My child I’m with you. I hear you pray,
‘Oh, help me, Lord! Need You today!’”

He is my friend, near to the end.
Gently leads me. His servant be.
He helps me pray – knows what to say.
He’s all I need. On Him I feed.

When I am wond’ring of what to do,
He gently leads me to what is truth.
He is my helper. He strengthens me.
When I’m in want, supplies my need.

He comforts me with all His love.
Gives me His grace from heav’n above.
I heed His call to watch and pray,
To guard my heart throughout each day.

When He is calling to come to Him,
To let Him lead you, trust Him within,
How will you answer to Him today?
Will you say, “Yes, Lord, have your way”?

Do not neglect to let Him in,
Cleanse you from sin, made new within.
Leave all your sin, obey your Lord,
Trust in His Word – His mighty Sword.

Whatever God Has Commanded

This is the heart of the weak Christianity today. And every weak Christian's problem. They don't have "commandments" from God anymore. Because the Relationship totally changed and they never took head. They are still walking in the commandments of others of the OT and of the NT and not in their own commandments which they received in their closet. And God who became our "Abba Father/Daddy" is waiting for them to come and hear what their commandments for today is. Because the door is opened in Jesus. For everyone. And God said "everyone". But they still want others to hear from God on their behalf. And it is backfiring badly.
