What's so Good About the Good News?

Good news is always welcome in a world that is awash with the depressing , the sad, the shocking, the catastrophic. Many news channels leave special items that can be classified as 'good news' for the final segment of the broadcast, just after the weather. Having been bombarded with the gloomy reports earlier, it is always something of a relief to see something lighter, refreshing, or amusing. Such a scenario is a telling indictment on the state of the world. The world we live in today is not a happy place, and the media, whether it be television, radio, or the press, is a constant testimony and reminder that we are surrounded on every side by unrelenting horror stories bringing disease, death, and destruction to both the innocent and not so innocent alike. It is a fact that we have seen so much bad news that we have become so inured by it that it takes major disasters to genuinely move most people to any semblance of emotional empathy with the suffering and dying. 'Lesser' forms of bad news are now so common that we have become quite blasé; the story of the Good Samaritan may have made the final segment, but the violent assault on the wayfarer would have barely rated a mention.
Which brings me to a particularly notable story that deserves to have its own segment on every news broadcast every day.

The gospel, which word translated from the original Greek being ευαγγελιον (euaggelion) means literally 'glad tidings', that is, news worthy of celebrating. The gospel is the story of how God has made available to man an avenue of escape from a world that is dying under a weight of sin and woe. Since the time of Adam and Eve God has been doing everything possible to relieve man from the burden of guilt, anguish, suffering, and fear. Promised to the ancients, and faithfully handed down from father to son until it found written expression at the time of Moses, God's unconditional love for man and His utter willingness to forgive all who come to Him in repentance is the best news there is for anyone tired of this present world and desiring freedom from the bondage of sin, addictions, and the resulting emotional and physical pain. And 2000 years ago the gospel found physical expression in Jesus Christ, who being the eternal Son of the Father and Creator of all things, took the form of a man, humbled Himself to the point of death, taking upon Himself the curse of sin and its inevitable consequences, death, to provide man with an opportunity to be free from condemnation, and through the resurrection power Jesus offers all, can be changed into a completely new creation, a man or woman with divine power at his/her disposal to live an abundant life that brings contentment and peace and joy regardless of circumstances and the wickedness that assails us on all sides.
The problems that we daily cope with, or not, affect every area of life. To escape those problems we resort to drugs, alcohol, gambling, and innumerable other excessive behaviours all designed to distract us from reality. But reality is difficult to ignore. Sometimes it stares at us every morning from the mirror when we brush our teeth. It is all around us, and we are bombarded with the worst of it from every quarter. Newscasts are invariably portraying the worst examples of bad news. From disaster to crime, from death to the eccentric, the news is a constant reminder of the state of the world we all struggle with. We struggle to cope. We know that we were created for better than this. We know, in the depths of our hearts, that the current state of the world is not the way God created it; not the way He meant it to be. In a world becoming so corrupted by sin, disease, destruction, and death, it is becoming invariably more difficult to find some genuine good news.
In the midst of disasters, we do hear of miraculous survival stories that bring some relief from the many deaths that may have occurred. We do hear stories of joy from time to time. Stories of love, survival, the miraculous, the hopeful. But the gospel of Jesus Christ my friends is the ultimate in good news. It is the good news of unconditional self-sacrificial love. It is the good news that tells us

"that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him would not perish, but have everlasting life".
(John 3:16)

It is the good news of such unconditional love that

Romans 5:6 ¶ when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.
8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that,
while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

The wonderfully good news of the gospel is such that God doesn't desire that we have to improve our sin sick depressing sad lives to be acceptable to Him. He loves us right now, just as we are. The Bible is a constant reminder of God's unfailing unconditional love. From Genesis to Revelation, God is portrayed as faithful, merciful, gracious, kind, gentle, understanding, generous, and patient. God is constantly waiting for us to respond to His love. His whole focus of attention is upon this world that has wandered so far from His will. Sin has brought all under its bondage, but Jesus came to set us free. To set us free not only from its condemnation through forgiveness, but freedom from sin itself through the power of His Spirit operating in our lives. The promise of God is that He will recreate in us a new man, or woman. We can have a fresh beginning, be born again. Not a physical rebirth of course, but a spiritual rebirth that enables us to enter into a personal, vibrant, living and loving relationship with our Creator. And it is through this relationship with our Maker that we can start on on the road to healing form depression, from addictions, from selfishness, from fear, from guilt. Through our relationship with Jesus and through Him to His Father, God's promises of joy, peace, and contentment are made available.

2 Cor. 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Revel.3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
12 Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.
13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

HI brakelite good post but is unconditional love biblical ?

that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him would not perish, but have everlasting life". (John 3:16)

Paul wrote, “Love must be without hypocrisy..."

Did not the Holy Spirit slay (kill) Ananias and his wife Sapphira for the sin of lying (Acts 5:1-11)?

Did not Peter hold the Jews of Jerusalem culpable for having conspired against and for murdering the Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 3:15,19; 4:10,27)?

Did not the Apostle Paul bring accountability and judgment upon the Corinthians for having harbored the sexually immoral (1 Cor. 5 & 6)?

And are not Christians warned about the fact that "Evil company corrupts good habits (i.e., character)"? And exhorted, "But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—not even to eat with such a person."

I absolutely agree about unconditional love! That sentiment - unconditional love - has all but achieved cult-like status in the minds of some people, and is, more often than not, applied to situations where it needn't be. And by doing so one is saddled with unnecessary and un-scriptural burdens.

Matthew 10:14
<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td>
</td><td valign="top"><table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" height="21" width="239"><tbody><tr><td colspan="2" class="btext" height="20">
</td></tr></tbody></table></td></tr></tbody></table>"If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town".

This is conditional love.

The words unconditional and love are not used in Scripture in either the Old or New Testaments, nor do any of the church fathers use the phrase. You'd think they would have!

The phrase unconditional love is inherently contradictory: to love is to care deeply about the condition of the one loved. If there is unconditional love, then why did Jesus bother declaring so many conditions? "You must be born again." etc.

In a typical teaching of Jesus, much of what he said were the life-giving conditions of moving out of a position of wrath and into a loving relationship with the Father. The catch-phrase unconditional love strips these words right out of our Savior's mouth. "Hey Jesus, you can't say that! Don't you know that God's agape love is unconditional!"

John 8:31-32 ...Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
IF/THEN is a condition. So is UNLESS. And this is the kind of thing Jesus often said.

The world loves the term, unconditional love. For by it, they can exclaim, "God's unconditional love means that we will all go to heaven."

This isn’t true. God loved us while we were sinners but this in no way implies God approves sin. Jesus prayed for the very people who nailed Him to the cross but this in no way means Jesus approved of their actions.

Unconditional love is in the fact God offers everyone the opportunity to repent and receive eternal life, just as Christians present the gospel to every creature. Our Lord doesn’t delight in the destruction of the wicked but He will put an end to the fallen state His creation is currently wallowing in after much long suffering. God delights in the destruction of wickedness.

When our children stray, or are disobedient, we discipline/punish but this in no way alters our love for them. This is unconditional love. I suppose we can say believers only are God’s children?

We know God is perfectly just so regardless of His love He will mete out correct verdicts for every man. I suppose we can say God loves His creation/man unconditionally but each individual will be dealt with according to his/her faith/works and reap the reward/consequences. Few enter through the narrow gate.

Hate the sin love the sinner is the best way to describe God’s unconditional love imo.

I agree with agua's summation. Even in the final destruction of the wicked, God is expressing His love for them. They have hardened their hearts to such a degree, they have cherished sin to such an extent, that to live without it would be painful. Heaven to them would be hell. God, in love, deals with them in the only way possible without intruding on their freedom of choice.
God loves us right now. He loves the worst of sinners, right now, regardless of their sin. To claim otherwise is to denigrate the character of God. God is love. It is His nature to love, everything He does, without exception, is motivated by love. Everything. Mercy, grace, censure, punishment. All love.
"God commended His love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
That includes the very worst of sinners. Like Mannaseh for example. He had the great prophet Isaiah sawn in half. Yet God accepted his repentance and restored him to the throne. That my friends is unconditional love.
That said, none of this lessens or mitigates against God's hatred of sin. Which is why God sent His Son to earth in the first place. To save us from our sins. It is God's great love for us that motivated Him to bring to us the gospel message. A message of power that frees us not just from condemnation, but frees us from the power that sin has over us. The most wonderful truth that we can offer the unsaved is the truth that while God accepts us as we are, wretched, poor, blind, sinful and weak, addiction afflicted and helpless, He does not leave us as we are. Praise God.

There are a few things worth investigating here.

Paul wrote, “Love must be without hypocrisy..."

Love without hypocrisy means our love should be genuine and sincere.

Did not the Holy Spirit slay (kill) Ananias and his wife Sapphira for the sin of lying (Acts 5:1-11)?
Ananais and Sapphira were killed as discipline/punishment for their gross sin.

Did not Peter hold the Jews of Jerusalem culpable for having conspired against and for murdering the Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 3:15,19; 4:10,27)?
Remember these blind guides and false prophets were also bought by Jesus. They didn't accept His love though.

Did not the Apostle Paul bring accountability and judgment upon the Corinthians for having harbored the sexually immoral (1 Cor. 5 & 6)?
God standards are to be upheld yes.

Discipline in the Church is a loving action which helps us stay within God's holy standards. When we remove a brother it's out of love for him so that he will be remorseful and turn from his evil ways. We then welcome the brother back if he repents.

2Co 2:6-8 NKJV This punishment which was inflicted by the majority is sufficient for such a man, (7) so that, on the contrary, you ought rather to forgive and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with too much sorrow. (8) Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love to him.

We never stop loving him though.

God disciplines because He loves us, not because He stops.

Pro 13:24 He who spares his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him promptly.

but is unconditional love biblical ?

Yes agua isn't it interesting how often believers use the term "unconditional love"? Yet you won't find 't those 2 words used together in either the KJV or NIV bibles. So I think most Christians don't even know why they use that term when all we really know biblically is that God loves us.

Plus the bible says things like IF we endure and IF we obey and many other "IF" scenarios and as you pointed out with reference to "Ananias and Sapphira"; clearly indicates that God does indeed place 'conditions' on our salvation which includes God's "love" for us would it not? ;)

Indeed, none of us would have a clue what God might mean by unconditional love, IMO. I think we over-indulge God's grace and mercy too since that didn't seem to help Ananias and Sapphira either?

There is condition on salvation.

Rom 10:8-9 NKJV But what does it say? "THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART" (that is, the word of faith which we preach): (9) that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

Can you post some scriptures that place conditions on God's love.

Jesus taught to love God,neighbour, brother, and enemy. From this who do we not love?

God's justice and love operate in harmony. If He loves us while we were sinners why now can we suggest He didn't love Ananais and Sapphira ?

Exactly my points all along. There most certainly are conditions, and God's mercy and love shouldn't be abused by using hippie-era slogans that make God into some kind of pushover to sin and evil. (The term, "unconditional love", originated in the 1960's by the way).

Now for those that have a different take on the term and what it means, let me just say, I don't think any of us disagree that God's love is astoundingly AMAZING. I certainly don't.

His grace is unconditional, but some of you fail to appreciate the difference between unconditional grace and relational love. In God's relational love there are MANY conditions. Cause and effect, like : "do this and this is what will result", "do that and you'll get that result".
If everything about God was truly unconditional, the pagans who say we're all going to Heaven because God is pure love (as if that's ALL He is), would be right. Which of course they're not.

Mixing up God's unconditional salvific grace/love with relational love does a disservice to the Justice and Holiness of God.God does not, will not and cannot condone or tolerate evil. PERIOD. No matter how much we talk about unconditional love.

Agua stated that :"There is a misconception that unconditional love = acceptance of sin". I would just add that neither does He accept, nordoes He tolerate sin.
I don't know what else to say about this subject, except that God's love is so powerful and awe-inspiring, that maybe we owe a little more respect and reverential fear to it, rather than using it as a blanket slogan that potentially confuses (unsaved) people into thinking that anything goes and repentance is somehow optional.

Cheers!

God does tolerate/allow sin otherwise we wouldn't be here. I guess what you mean is God won't tolerate/allow sin for ever. You see if you apply a condition that God will no longer love us if we sin then no one will be loved. Don't confuse righteous justice with the removal of love. God will destroy sinners on judgement day but this isn't because he doesn't love them . It's in spite of his love.

I think people get confused between showing love and bringing justice/discipline/punishment and if we don't understand the difference it can lead us to love insincerely/hypocritically or through clenched teeth.

Rom_5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

We don't receive God's love in return for ours. We receive it first.

1Jn_4:19 We love Him because He first loved us.

Yes, that's what I mean. I have stressed repentance. :)

agreed! :)

I don't think I have. And in that spirit I would add, don't confuse unconditional love with removal of justice. I think we're saying the same thing here, but somehow not seeing that?

please elaborate on this.

Amen!

We don't receive God's love in return for ours. We receive it first.

1Jn_4:19 We love Him because He first loved us.

He calls and chooses us, we would never look for Him if He didn't.

God disciplines/chastens/corrects/punishes/destroys while He continues to love. He shows love to all and brings perfect justice without exception. Take a look at the love God has for His nation Israel. Even though they have strayed, and been punished for this, He still loves her while they sin.

Hos 3:1 NKJV Then the LORD said to me, "Go again, love a woman who is loved by a lover and is committing adultery, just like the love of the LORD for the children of Israel, who look to other gods and love the raisin cakes of the pagans."

Loving through clenched teeth is when a person feels forced to love against his will/heart. Love without hypocrisy is genuine/sincere love.

Agreed. We are not to be like Pharisees, doing things for outward appearances or ulterior motives. God knows our hearts and if His love is in us we will naturally shine it upon others, no hypocrisy needed.
