O LORD, God of my salvation, I cry out to you by day. I come to you at night. Now hear my prayer; listen to my cry. Psalm 88:1-2 NLT
There’s not a lot in Psalm 88 that will lift you up when life has you down, when you’re struggling to feel a sense of hope, when it feels like God has forgotten you—or worse yet, has turned against you.
In this dark psalm, the writer declares…
…”I am overwhelmed with troubles” (v. 3).
…”I am set apart with the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom you remember no more” (v. 5).
…”Your wrath has swept over me; your terrors have destroyed me” (v. 16).
But there is a glimmer of hope, and it’s found at the beginning of the psalm. The psalmist addresses the Lord as “God of my salvation” and declares that he will continue to “cry out to you” day and night and entreats Him to “hear my prayer; listen to my cry.”
Whatever difficulties we face, we can turn to the Lord, knowing that He is the God of our salvation and our source of comfort and encouragement.
Prayer: God of my salvation, use my life’s difficulties to remind me to turn to You first in all situations. Thank You for Your unfailing love.
