"Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "Because your heart [is] lifted up, And you say, 'I [am] a god, I sit [in] the seat of gods, In the midst of the seas,' Yet you [are] a man, and not a god, Though you set your heart as the heart of a god (Behold, you [are] wiser than Daniel! There is no secret that can be hidden from you! Ezekiel 28:2-3 NKJV
The king of Tyre was a talented and wise leader who built the city into one of the most beautiful, richest cities in the world. Sadly, though, the king allowed what others had said about him to cause him to be filled with extreme pride. He actually began to see himself as a god and not a mere man.
One of the biggest potential dangers in accomplishing great things—as a leader, as a businessman, as a minister—is the praise people heap on you. If you’re not careful, the things others say can go to your head and cause you to think more highly of yourself than you should.
That happened to the king of Tyre, and it can happen to us today too.
When people say good things about you, respond graciously. But it’s always good to also remind them—and yourself—that God deserves all the credit for who you are and what you do.
Prayer: Lord, please keep me humble by reminding me often that everything I am and everything I do is on account of Your generous love.
