So David said to Saul, "Who [am] I, and what [is] my life [or] my father's family in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?" 1 Samuel 18:18 NKJV

King Saul, Israel’s first monarch, feared that his days as king were numbered. As a result, he deviously offered the man God had chosen as his successor, young David, an irresistible prize—his oldest daughter’s hand in marriage. The only caveat: the young king-to-be would have to routinely slay the dreaded Philistine soldiers in hand-to-hand combat.

David’s response to Saul’s offer (above) demonstrated his humility. The Bible is abundantly clear that God loves humility and hates human pride. Humility keeps you on track with what God wants to do in and through you, while pride scuttles what could have been something great.

Can you think of an example of how pride has kept someone from a great blessing from God? Has that ever happened to you?

How can you keep a humble heart so that you can receive everything God has for you?

Begin with the prayer below.

Prayer: Father in heaven, Your written Word says You resist the proud and bless those who are humble. I don’t want to miss anything You have for me, so please help me. Help me check myself when I am tempted to think more highly of myself than I should.

Pride is a sneaky fellow, I imagine we all have it from time to time because it is so prevalent in our culture . One of the worse cases I see from time to time is the Pride of works...that we must do something to please God, like we could do anything but believe!
