Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Zechariah 9:9 ESC
Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem is among a handful of events mentioned in all four Gospels (Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-10, Luke 19:28-40, and John 12:12-15). In each account, Jesus sends His disciples to bring back a colt—a young male donkey—for Him to ride into town on.
But why a donkey? Why not a horse?
First, Jesus fulfilled Zechariah’s prophecy from today’s verse by choosing a donkey to ride into town on. Secondly, the reason Zechariah spoke about a donkey instead of a horse is because of the message it sent.
A king or military leader who conquers a town through force would ride his warhorse into the defeated city to project an image of strength and to enforce compliance through fear. But a king who enters on a donkey does so because he comes in peace. He humbles himself and invites others to follow him of their own free will rather than demanding their compliance.
How do you bring others to Jesus? Get off your warhorse and find yourself a donkey. With a humble heart, lead others to the King of kings who comes in peace.
Prayer: Jesus, help me follow Your example by leading with humility over strong-arm tactics.
