Greek "euangelion" means "good news" or "glad tidings". It should never be translated in any other way other than this in modern English bibles. Paul is correctly translated as saying "my good news", not my gospel, as is also Jesus himself correctly translated in Luke as to proclaim good news to the poor Luke 4:18.
According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, "the word gospel is derived from the Anglo-Saxon term god-spell, meaning "good story." The Greek means "good news", not good story. Jesus is good news for sinners and common people and the sick, poor, slaves, immigrants and the otherwise oppressed. Average people can easily relate to "good news", while most probably have no idea of the meaning of "gospel".
This is important because "good news" demonstrates the sinners and average people secular focus of the New Testament message, rather than being about establishing a new religion. It may be true that "good news" sometimes refers to the larger message and other times maybe not, but why not translate it into English properly as "good news"?
The word "gospel" sounds religious while "good news" is secular and easily relatable by anyone. Words that are poorly translated like gospel, disciple, church, bishop, apostle and many others, are a good example of how charlatans and frauds have turned the deliberately secular Jesus into a twisted religion called Christianity, a religion not found anywhere in the Bible.
Why do translators feel such a need to leave certain orthodox sounding words untranslated in Greek or 16th Century English, rather than correctly rendering them into modern English so the average reader can more easily grasp the intent? Why do religious leaders continue to feel a need to mislead and otherwise confuse regular average people who Jesus claims to dearly love?
Jesus deliberately chooses to eat, drink and associate with sinners and the common people. He befriended some of the worst thought of people in First Century Palestine; tax collectors, the most despised people of his time and Samaritans, the most hated; Samaritans being the "illegals" of his society. And even though a strong pacifist, Jesus went out of his way to befriend people in the Roman army.
Jesus calls his message to the people of the earth "good news" for sinners. Why do so many Christians call it something else, as if they are smarter than God? Who decided on poorly translating these orthodox religious-sounding difficult to understand words instead of translating the correct Greek meaning into modern English and, why?
