1Samuel 17:40*And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.

Why five stones?

One theory is One for Goliath and the other for his(goliaths) family members who were supposedly giants as well and present at the time.

I agrree with your theory 2 Sam. 20:22 goliath had four sons. good answer not many read the history out in the old testiment. good job

I always heard it preached that Gloiath had 4 brothers. So if they came afater Davaid he was ready for them.

In Biblical numerology, he number "five" is for grace. I like to think that GOD'S grace was there and sufficient for whatever David was to face. It was proven to be so. Have you ever thought about the how accurate the stone was directed to the exact place that wasn't protected or notice that Goliath fell forward, "and he fell upon his face to the earth", instead of backward when hit, ever wonder if GOD may have given him a push into the stone? David told him, "This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand,...that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel." I think this is a great story.

Very good post, I never thought about Goliath falling foward. Thanks TDS52 makes me feel good to know Gods always there and helping. Thanks again for thr nugget.

I am one who hadn't read this story fully and did not know of the 4 brothers. Now I have much more admiration for David as I though he was very faithfull and brave to face a single giant, but to face the possibility of 5? and still listen to the Lord. Wow! That is faith. How does the song go...?

I wish I had the faith to stand before a giant,
with a sling and a stone.
Surrounded by the sound of shaking armor.

Great post.
Thank you.

God bless us all,
Nigh
