Does not wisdom cry out, And understanding lift up her voice? Proverbs 8:1 NKJV

Proverbs 8 personifies Wisdom, describing a woman who stands in public places, shouting for attention, offering instruction, promising a better life to anyone who will listen.

It’s a compelling image. But in today’s world, we see countless people completely missing her. Faces buried in screens they never look up to notice her beckoning. Ear buds filling their heads with noise, they never hear her cries.

“Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold,” she calls out, “for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her” (Proverbs 8:10-11). Christian men, though prone to the distractions of this world, know that Wisdom’s call is true. We are taught by God’s Spirit within us that she is a genuine friend.

And real friends always point us to God. “The Lord brought me forth as the first of his works, before his deeds of old. I was formed long ages ago, at the very beginning, when the world came to be,” she says. “I was constantly at his side. I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence, rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind” (Proverbs 8:22-23, 30-31).

This knowledge of God, this true delight, is ours for the taking. Wisdom is calling, Heed her words in your own Bible.

Prayer: Lord, please grant me Your wisdom today.

And Wisdom, seeing that the world was too proud to accept its advice, went back to heaven and awaited those who truly sought wisdom with a humble attitude.
