HEAD OVER HEELS

'Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord ...' 2 Peter 3:18

Relax. Stick those headphones on. Google something. Pick up the guitar. Click iPlayer on. Master that new game on the professional setting. Have a snooze. Anything's got to be better than spending time with the great bore in the sky, right? You can catch up with Him tomorrow. I'm sure when you wake up you'll have lost all interest in your console. Music will no longer do it for you. You'll have outgrown Facebook. The only desire you'll have come 9am tomorrow is to spend every waking second with your Lord and Saviour in contemplative prayer. But just in case amazing spiritual growth doesn't happen by osmosis, why not start right now? You don't fall in love with somebody by ignoring them.

Perhaps you've never felt God do that funny fluttery thing in your stomach because you've never spent time falling in love with Him. The Psalmist wrote, 'When my heart whispered "Seek God", my whole being replied, "I'm seeking Him!"' (Ps. 27:8 TM). Falling head over heels with God is like this. You start out spending a little time; soon your whole being is craving more and more of God.

What now? In the devotional book 'Walk This Way', Steve Holmes writes that, "Prayer is a gift God gives, not a duty God commands." Ask yourself if your prayer time with God reflects that fact. It might help to think of prayer as a relationship, and to think of disciplined prayer as the appointments put in your diary to make time for that relationship.
