The LORD is my shepherd; I have all that I need. ... Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. Psalm 23:1, 4 NLT

David was not a perfect man, and he faltered many times in his walk with God. Yet his confidence was in the Lord, the one he recognized as his very own shepherd. A shepherd in biblical times was tasked with giving his flock protection and with moving the sheep from place to place so they could find adequate food and water.

As the sheep seemed to know they could trust their shepherd, David sensed in the deepest way that he could trust his God as his source of anything and everything he needed.

Centuries after David wrote Psalm 23, Jesus, God in the flesh, appeared on the scene, perfectly reflecting God’s shepherd heart. “I am the good shepherd,” He stated. “The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11).

Jesus is your Good Shepherd. He willingly laid down His life for you and continues leading, guiding, and protecting you all day, every day. He truly is everything you need.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are my Good Shepherd. You truly are all I need. You lead me and guide me through even the darkest, most difficult times in my life.
