Men tend to admire the self-reliant, independent types, those who seem able to solve any problem and accomplish any task, seemingly without any outside help. Here in the West, that is sometimes referred to as "rugged individualism."
There's no question God can use such a man to accomplish great things for His eternal kingdom. However, that can only happen when he humbles himself and learns to trust not in his human strength or abilities, but in the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.
Zerubbabel led the first wave of Jewish exiles returning to their homeland from the Babylonian Exile. God had charged him to lead in the rebuilding of His temple, which had been destroyed decades earlier. He had also provided him with some very able men to accomplish this huge task. Still, God let them know they wouldn't accomplish the task through their own strength, but only by His empowerment.
God is not interested in sharing His glory with anyone, and He wants men to learn to rely completely on Him in all areas of their lives. So if you want to accomplish something for His kingdom, never forget that you can only do it by His Spirit.
Prayer: Lord, may I never forget that all I do, I do through the empowerment of Your Spirit.
