Why do we call jesus the son of god if he is god?

For some time now i have been confused as to the identity of Jesus. The bible confuses me a bit cause it says that Jesus is the son of god and that's how the world sees him as, but then I've heard that Jesus is god and that confuses me cause if he is god then who was Jesus referring to when he said that he came to do the will of his father and that we must all pray to our heavenly father. Jesus also prayed alot during his time here, Now if Jesus is god then y would he pray to himself? Jesus allowed and accepted worship from his followers so that means that he has to be god right? because even Jesus says that there is only one god and that we shouldn't worship false idols and false gods cause god is the only god. Another thing jesus said was
"I ascend to my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God," This is what confuses me the most because why would he say that he is ascending to his god??? Man am i confused right now lol.

I sometimes dont know who to mention when i pray whether if i should mention jesus or our heavenly father. I feel like i cant move on forward in my journey to become a christian untill i fully understand this. So please i would really appreciate it if someone can clarify this for me cause i no longer wish to be confused. Thank You and god bless.

I hope i didnt offend anyone when i asked this. I say this because this has gotten 25 views but no respond, but its that the trinity has always kinda confused me.

I believe this is one of the things that may never make sense to us because we do not have the mind capcity of God. But, since it says it in the bible we can be sure it is true and we just need to trust God. Sorry that's prob not what you were hoping for. Ethier way, I hope it helps.

Because it's an idiosyncratic phrase that has been misinterpreted by modern day folks :)

We see the phrases "son of God" and "son of man" both in the New Testament. These were common phrases in antiquity and many scholars believe that they were used in juxtaposition with Roman society.

Augustus Caesar (and other emperors and nobility figures -- in other cultures too) was referred to as the "son of god," a statement that was quite blasphemous (for obvious reasons) to Jews. It is entirely probable that the term, relating to Jesus, was created in opposition to Caesar's divinity.

More relating to this can be read in works as:

"Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography" by John Dominic Crossan
"A History of God" by Karen Armstrong
"Jesus" by Michael Borg

Hi seeker,the way i pray is To God our Father through Jesus and with the help of the Holy Spirit

Luke 3.21-22 records that Father, Son (Jesus), and Holy Spirit were all three present at the same event, at one and the same time. The event was the Baptism of Jesus....
  • Jesus was in the Jordan River, being baptized.
  • The Holy Spirit was descending upon Jesus.
  • The Father was speaking from Heaven.

  • This makes it clear that Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are three distinct persons.
The Jews wanted to stone Jesus because he ‘being a man’, claimed he was God (John 10:33). Jesus doesn’t dispute that he is a man, and both he and the Jews are talking about God as a third party. He says he is the Son of this God, they say that’s blasphemy. Jesus has just said, ‘I and the Father are one’ (in John 10:30). But he doesn’t say ‘I am the Father.’
The Father is in the Son, and the Son is in the Father (John 10:38), but they relate to each other - they are not ‘the same’. John 1:1 says, ‘The Word was with God’ (distinction), ’and the Word was God’. We can’t say, ‘The Son is the Father’, but we can say ‘the Son and the Father are One’. They are not one Son, or one Father, but One God. They relate to each other by the Holy Spirit.
They relate eternally and perfectly – they are always relating, and are never separate. The three ‘persons’ of the Trinity (the ‘threeness’) are not separate. But they are always Father, Son and Spirit, because they are always relating as the Father, the Son and the Spirit. So although the three persons are not separate, they are distinct. They are not ‘the same’.
They never act separately – For example, God is active in creation, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
(For references, see:
Genesis 1:1, Deuteronomy 32:6 and Malachi 2:10 for the Father;
Colossians 1:15-17 or Psalm 33:6 for the Son (or the Word);
and Psalm 33:6 or Psalm 104:30 for the Holy Spirit. )
But they act distinctly. For instance when the Son becomes a man, in the ‘incarnation’, the Father sends the Son in the power of the Spirit. The Son is incarnate, the Father isn’t, the Spirit isn’t. But we can still say ‘God is incarnate’.
Plus, we never see/hear/interact with one separately - you’re relating to them all. When you have God’s Holy Spirit living in you, he is the Spirit of the Father and the Son (’God’ and ‘Christ’ in the words that Romans 8:9 uses), so the Father and the Son live in you (John 14:23). Jesus Christ, God the Son, is in you by His Spirit, and God the Father is in you by His Spirit. The same Spirit, but again, Jesus is not the Father.
By the way, that was why the Old Testament prophets could say “The LORD says”: because God lived in them and spoke through them. It means we can trust their words, and Jesus’ words – in fact the whole message of the Bible - as being the word of God, not just of human beings (see 1 Thessalonians 2:13).

And also

The Son and the Father are the same Being; they are different Persons. A person is not the same thing as a being; a being is not the same thing as a person. There is nothing logically inconsistent about positing a being in which we find multiple persons. The Son is one person. The Father another. The Holy Spirit still another.

Next point to consider:

Did you not know that all living organisms, plants, etc, have three distinct different parts yet remain one?

Each part is vastly different than the other parts and each have differing attributes / functions that make each part distinct.. Yet, these three different parts make one.

For simplicity – a single cell organism his an outer shell, inside this shell are the internal organs, then you have a fluid substance. Each part is different than the other. Yet – it remains one.

Trunk of a tree has a hard outer shell (Bark) to provide protection, then you have the inner parts – the fibrous softer interior core and then the sap (Liquid).

Also, same with leaves and blades of grass, these all have three distinct parts themselves!

Yet, we have no trouble thinking these as one, despite each differing parts that make the whole – whole. We as humans have this evidence too: we have our skin and skeleton, then our internal organs, as well as fluids: Three main parts, each with different attributes that distinguishes these parts according to function. Even the human brain has three basic distinct parts!

Hope this helps.

Jesus was the Father in Creation
The Son in salvation
And the Holy Spirit that we can receive to help us endure until our end as human beings.

Jesus was an example for us to follow in the flesh, to pray to the Father as He did...as an example. Everything He did was an example for us to follow. The blood and water that poured from Him is IMPORTANT to consider when you study this out.

There is ONE God Almighty, one I Am. He does not share His Glory with another, so to say these are separate persons is, well; we must all decide what goes into our confession of accepting Christ, and what is "believing". Work out your own salvation...dont settle for just any answer.

He said to be baptized in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Jesus came "in my Fathers name".
God said He alone was our only Savior. Jesus is the name above all names, the only name we can be saved by. He is our Savior, our only Savior. God is our Savior, Jesus is His chosen name. God is Spirit, He is life. Flesh can not be in flesh, Spirit can be in flesh. God's Spirit. God is God is God.

The Apostles Knew what Jesus meant when he said how to baptize, that is why in any case where baptism took place in the bible, it was in the Name of Jesus, into the Name of the Lord etc..not the titles as many have done.

Mark 16:12-16

After that, He appeared in another form to two of them as they walked and went into the country. And they went and told it to the rest, but they did not believe them either.

(He is not limited to what or who He is)

Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen. And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.

The question is who really believes? Who really is concerned enough to even care that this is truth? Jesus said it. Jesus said it. How do countless Pastors ignore this? How does anyone study this out and still accept that none of this means anything?

The trinity is an incorrect view of Who God is.
He is three manifestations of One God...not One God in three persons. If God is God - WHO IS the third Person? It is the simple things that confound the wise, not the complicated things that requires special faith.

If you are leaning into believing Jesus is God, able to do all things, you are right on the edge of His Kingdom, don't give it up. Study it out.

Interestingly the Son will always be in subjection to the Father (1Co 15:27) and yet the Father calls Him Most High God (Heb 1:8 ).
While Jesus is indeed God He is distinct in form and function from to the Father and the Holy Spirit yet they are one God.

"'For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways' declares the Lord. 'As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.'" (Is 55:8-9 NIV)

It's been my experience that the doctrine of the Trinity cannot be fully explained on this side of eternity, yet I believe it on the basis of Jesus' testimony in Mt 28:19 and elsewhere in Scripture. Either I trust Jesus or I don't. I've trusted Him as my Lord and Savior for nearly 27 years as of this writing and been blessed beyond my wildest dreams.

I have actually heard what "son of God" means, but I learned about it in Swedish so it will be difficult for me to explain it in english ...

I once heard a jew say that the reason they don't believe in Jesus is because they don't believe that God could have a son the same way that we humans can have children. But "Son of God" does not mean "biological son of God" ...

The hebrew word(s?) for "son of" is used in many different situations, not only to describe Jesus as "Son of God". For example, a prophet can be called "son of prophets" (or something like that), which simply means that he is one of the prophets.

When the Bible says that Jesus is "son of man", that means He is a human. So, Jesus is both "Son of God" and "son of man", which means that He is both God and human.

Conclusion: That Jesus is "Son of God" means that He is a part of God, not that He is separated from God!

Note: English is my secondary language, and sometimes I can't find the right words to use ... so if something in my explanation sounds weird, that's why.

Seeker Of Jesus,
I have not read others post so there might be duplicates, I hope all of you will forgive me for that.

Back to the question then. Everything we discuss we start by defining things, so let me define some stuffs
1. God is infinite, Omnipotent, Omniscient, et al
2. Man is powerful but limited in every aspect

Implication of the above points is:
1. We cannot fully grasp knowledge of God, unless we are gods which we are not!
2. We can understand God up to but not more than How he reveal himself to us. Even If He reveals everything to us, we cannot grasp infinite things, since we are finite.
3. God did reveal to us what is necessary for us for He knows us.

Now bear with me and let me take your questions and try my best to give Biblical answers. Bear in mind that I'm fellow human being, limited like you and everyone else but I will be explaining what I know so far according to knowledge God have provided and I have been able to grasp, by His grace.

Is Jesus God? Yes! He was and He is. From eternity to eternity He is God. Was Jesus a man? Yes and No! No because before Incarnation, He wasn't man, and Yes because after Incarnation to eternity future, He is Man. So as for now, He is both 100% Man, and 100% God. At Incarnation something marvelous happened, God the Son added Humanity to His Godhood forever to die for you and me, to pay sacrifice necessary for our rebellious. We rebelled Against God and were sentenced to death. Somebody have to die for us. Since we were all guilty, then we could not pay for ourselves.

Then Infinite God came and lived with us, showing us a perfect example of perfect human being God intended and died for payment of our rebellious. So we are reconciled to God through payment Jesus made.

Why did Jesus called the Father God? Because He (The Father) is God with the Son and the Spirit. So Jesus as 100% Human, was right to say "My God" and since we are redeemed by Jesus' blood, He is our God too, hence sentence "your God". Since Jesus is God the Son (the Son of God the Father), then He is right to say "My Father" and since we, by blood of Jesus we are made sons/daughters, He is our Father

Note that, Jesus is the Son of God, not by birth, for He is eternal. We are, by second birth, that is, through repentance, believing and then God makes us a new by His Spirit.

Jesus, before death and resurrection, hd body like ours that thirst, hungers, get tired and even dies etc. But after resurrection, the body was glorified. That is, His body was the one we'll posses at resurrection day. So with that kind of body He needed to pray, and do all things .

I would be happy to help you in specific point, but generally that is what I can summarize. It is hard to put summary of infinite, but I hope you will get something

Remember in Isaiah, Jesus is called the "everlasting father."
Isa.9

[6] For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

I don't think it is possible to understand the trinity based on human experience.

Act 2:32&33 "This prophecy was speaking of Jesus, whom God raised from the dead, and we all are witnesses of this. Now he sits on the throne of highest honor in heaven, at God's right hand. And the Father, as he had promised, gave him the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see and hear today.

So according to what you believe, God raised Himself, sits beside Himself, and gives Himself to Himself to be pour out on us.

By what you have posted here in this thread I wonder are you part of the "Jesus Only" sect?

I think the best way to help explain this is God the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost are the trinity. They are one as like a mariage between a man and woman. When a man and a woman get married they become one idenity, the woman asums the mans last name, thus they are one. To help you I would suggest a refreance Bible or maybe a Strongs Concordance to study by. They are great help, also to start on this quest to help you the 1st chapter of the Gospel of John would be a good place to start. God
Bless and I hope I was of help. Search the Bible and pray you will find the answer you seek!!!!

–noun 1. a body of persons adhering to a particular religious faith; a religious denomination.

2. a group regarded as heretical or as deviating from a generally accepted religious tradition.

3. (in the sociology of religion) a Christian denomination characterized by insistence on strict qualifications for membership, as distinguished from the more inclusive groups called churches.

4.any group, party, or faction united by a specific doctrine or under a doctrinal leader.

Well, If you think I am a heretic because I absolutely Give God all the Glory, then maybe, maybe I am a "heretic".

I am not a member of a church that is a cult, I might add, my Pastor is a 'Trinitarian'...so I don't fit into that either.

I don't go door to door saying follow what I believe or you will go to hell, I don't try to cram 'religion' down peoples neck,

AHHH, but praise God I have been put down and harassed because I believe there is ONE God, who can do it ALL, He is the Father in Creation, the Son in salvation, and the all the Spirit of God I need to get through this war against the ugliness of who WE really are, filthy rags, worthless sinners, God is never changing, He is the same yesterday, today and forever. We change...

We change our beliefs, we change our minds we change our dreams. We are never the same from one day to the next. The human being pats themselves on the back for all the fine things they have created by their own hands, when there is nothing new under the sun. By God were all things created, Jesus created everything there is. He revealed Himself to this world and they rejected Him in every way.

Some even think that God did not know the outcome from the day He created the Universe and the time and space before and after. He knows ALL things.
He will get the Glory if you believe He is a God who had a child named Jesus He raised in heaven whom He sent down to earth to be born of a virgin and then die for our sins, because He could not go back on His promise of death being the outcome of sin. He will get the glory if you believe He was not able to do it Himself. He will get the Glory if everyone on this earth decided they did not believe in Him at all. To God be the Glory. He does NOT need us, we NEED Him. We are to Serve Him, yet He came as a servant, we are to seek His face, but no man is drawn unless He draws them. He is our GOD and He is our Savior. He alone did all these things.

Isa 42:5
Thus says God the LORD,
Who created the heavens and stretched them out,
Who spread forth the earth and that which comes from it,
Who gives breath to the people on it,
And spirit to those who walk on it:

Isa 45:18
For thus says the LORD,
Who created the heavens,
Who is God,
Who formed the earth and made it,
Who has established it,
Who did not create it in vain,
Who formed it to be inhabited:

“ I am the LORD, and there is no other.

Isa 48:
“ I have declared the former things from the beginning;
They went forth from My mouth, and I caused them to hear it.
Suddenly I did them, and they came to pass.
Because I knew that you were obstinate,
And your neck was an iron sinew,
And your brow bronze,
Even from the beginning I have declared it to you;
Before it came to pass I proclaimed it to you,
Lest you should say, ‘My idol has done them,
And my carved image and my molded image
Have commanded them.’
“ You have heard;
See all this.
And will you not declare it?
I have made you hear new things from this time,
Even hidden things, and you did not know them.
They are created now and not from the beginning;
And before this day you have not heard them,
Lest you should say, ‘Of course I knew them.’
Surely you did not hear,
Surely you did not know;
Surely from long ago your ear was not opened.
For I knew that you would deal very treacherously,
And were called a transgressor from the womb.
“ For My name’s sake I will defer My anger,
And for My praise I will restrain it from you,
So that I do not cut you off.
Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver;
I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.
For My own sake, for My own sake, I will do it;
For how should My name be profaned?
And I will not give My glory to another. “ Listen to Me, O Jacob,
And Israel, My called:
I am He, I am the First,
I am also the Last.
Indeed My hand has laid the foundation of the earth,
And My right hand has stretched out the heavens;
When I call to them,
They stand up together.
“ All of you, assemble yourselves, and hear!
Who among them has declared these things?
The LORD loves him;
He shall do His pleasure on Babylon,
And His arm shall be against the Chaldean's.
I, even I, have spoken;
Yes, I have called him,
I have brought him, and his way will prosper.
“ Come near to Me, hear this:
I have not spoken in secret from the beginning;
From the time that it was, I was there.
And now the Lord GOD and His Spirit
Have sent Me.”
Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer,
The Holy One of Israel:

“ I am the LORD your God,

Col 1

For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.
And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight—

John 8:13-19
The Pharisees therefore said to Him, “You bear witness of Yourself; Your witness is not true.”
Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I bear witness of Myself, My witness is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from and where I am going. You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. And yet if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me. It is also written in your law that the testimony of two men is true. I am One who bears witness of Myself, and the Father who sent Me bears witness of Me.”
Then they said to Him, “Where is Your Father?”
Jesus answered, “You know neither Me nor My Father. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also.”

John 8:48-58
Then the Jews answered and said to Him, “Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?”
Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. And I do not seek My own glory; there is One who seeks and judges. Most assuredly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death.”
Then the Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You have a demon! Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word he shall never taste death.’ Are You greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. Who do You make Yourself out to be?”
Jesus answered, “If I honor Myself, My honor is nothing. It is My Father who honors Me, of whom you say that He is your God. Yet you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I say, ‘I do not know Him,’ I shall be a liar like you; but I do know Him and keep His word. Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.”
Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?”
Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”

Revelation 1:8
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

And to quote you again...
"So according to what you believe, God raised Himself, sits beside Himself, and gives Himself to Himself to be pour out on us."

:hands:ABSOLUTELY.

I am of the Sect of Jesus Christ God Almighty if you insist I am of a sect.

And you tell me what NAME you or any other person on this earth will be saved by??? None other than Jesus.

For me to be called a "Jesus Only" person, Praise the Lord!!!!

May I ask what was there before any creation and the biggest question "Whom do you think Jesus is?"

I hope my previous post answers your question.

Whom do I think Jesus is? I think He is the flesh of God. The I am. The Alpha and the Omega, the Everlasting Father, the light, the Truth, the Living Water, the Word of God, the Holy Spirit,....He is My Lord and My God.

John 12
Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.
While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.
But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:
That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?
Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,
He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.
These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.
Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:
For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.
And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.
I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

2. a group regarded as heretical or as deviating from a generally accepted religious tradition.

Isa 48:
“ I have declared the former things from the beginning;
They went forth from My mouth, and I caused them to hear it.
Suddenly I did them, and they came to pass.
Because I knew that you were obstinate,
And your neck was an iron sinew,
And your brow bronze,
Even from the beginning I have declared it to you;
Before it came to pass I proclaimed it to you,
Lest you should say, ‘My idol has done them,
And my carved image and my molded image
Have commanded them.’
“ You have heard;
See all this.
And will you not declare it?
I have made you hear new things from this time,
Even hidden things, and you did not know them.
They are created now and not from the beginning;
And before this day you have not heard them,
Lest you should say, ‘Of course I knew them.’
Surely you did not hear,
Surely you did not know;
Surely from long ago your ear was not opened.
For I knew that you would deal very treacherously,
And were called a transgressor from the womb.
“ For My name’s sake I will defer My anger,
And for My praise I will restrain it from you,
So that I do not cut you off.
Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver;
I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.
For My own sake, for My own sake, I will do it;
For how should My name be profaned?
And I will not give My glory to another. “ Listen to Me, O Jacob,
And Israel, My called:
I am He, I am the First,
I am also the Last.
Indeed My hand has laid the foundation of the earth,
And My right hand has stretched out the heavens;
When I call to them,
They stand up together.
“ All of you, assemble yourselves, and hear!
Who among them has declared these things?
The LORD loves him;
He shall do His pleasure on Babylon,
And His arm shall be against the Chaldean's.
I, even I, have spoken;
Yes, I have called him,
I have brought him, and his way will prosper.
“ Come near to Me, hear this:
I have not spoken in secret from the beginning;
