How can we recognize the voice of God?

Hebrews 4:12
12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

I think the important thing to remember is that it is our job to get close to God. If we are doing our best to discover his will then I think God will make himself clear to you. Also, he does not act inconsistently with his word.
I think God speaks to us in many different ways, but mostly through his word.
