1Co 14:13 Therefore, the person who speaks in an [unknown] tongue should pray [for the power] to interpret and explain what he says. (AMP)The false nowadays tongue speaking is commonly called a “prayer language.” Those practicing the false tongue speaking believe they are speaking a prayer language, and that in this type of praying it is somehow deeper and more personal than praying with their native language with words they understand. However, that is not scriptural, and that even goes against the Word of God which says you will have a fruitless mind if you pray like that. Surely, a fruitless mind is not something one should be aiming for in personal prayer times.
A person who "prays" in an unknown tongue is speaking "mysteries" and if they want to know what they are saying they can ask God for interpretation if they want. Sometimes I ask for interpretation but most of the time I don't need to as I am being "edified" whether I understand it or not!
1Co 14:4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
1Co 14:14 For if I pray in an [unknown] tongue, my spirit [by the Holy Spirit within me] prays, but my mind is unproductive [it bears no fruit and helps nobody].
Praying in tongues is my "spirit" praying by the "Holy Spirit" directly to God! Why should I do that?
Rom 8:26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
Most believers know how to pray, but not all believers know what to pray for!
PC Nelson a Greek scholar says the words used "groanings that can not be uttered" means not in your regular normal speech. He went on to point out not only groanings but also praying in other tongues.
