Can a born again Christian lose their salvation?

whitestone i don't know do you realize this or not but your leaning on your interpreation of scriptures and on your understanding and acting like it's 100% truth because you see it as such. Now I tried to explains my view and if you reject it ok but know that your really just leaning to your understanding and theology. if you wish to treat that knowledge you have as God given truth then fine but I'm sticking with my interepreation because it makes most sense to me but not only that it lines up with rest of the scripture.
so unless someone would point out from the scripture that i am wrong why would I listen to your way of life theories , i can see your not even following what I said save to correct it anyhow via scripture.

so please don't post any more remarks about what you think of me ok? Let's talk about scripture if you wish. these remarks and thoughts you have about me serve really no rightful purpose...

That is your problem. You try to lean on your own understanding. I never lean on mine. Ever. I trust in the Lord. I don't reword scriptures to suit my sinful life style.

(Pro 3:5)
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

Scriptures are 100% truth Jari. I lean on those. You should too. You haven't been. You've been giving private interpretation. You are teaching false doctrine from your position of not wanting to be accountable to your sins. It is glaringly obvious immediately as you type your private views.

(Pro 12:15)
The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.

Word to the wise.

Peace

"We proclaim Him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. To this end I labor, struggling with all His energy, which so powerfully works in me. (Col 1:28-29)

If, as some seem to believe, salvation is assured by a single act of praying some sort of sinner's prayer, how is it that Paul had to struggle to establish and maintain the churches in Asia Minor? Isn't it true that those believers were constantly under intense pressure to revert back to their old ways? And isn't it true that believers today, especially new believers, are also constantly under pressure and many of them do give in and revert back? Satan and his servants do not give up easily!

SLE

If the truth of gospel be stolen who can then be saved ? The apostoles sure did have work agaisnt false teachers. Even agaisnt spirit of anti-christ

Umm whitestone
You seem continue those accusations just over my interpreation on hebrews. Like i said use scripture if you are right. I would learn from that but why cannot you show from scripture that your trust in the lords wisdom has yield the right understanding? I too am seeking the lord for wisdom.
God bless you

The word sin actually means "missing the mark".

The new testament definition of sin is anything that is not of faith.
So if anything that is not of faith misses the mark then the mark must be to always remain in faith.

Romans 14:23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

This means that what is sin to one person may not be sin to another.
To the pure all things are pure and to the impure nothing is pure.

Falling away then really means doing something that that you can't justify out of faith.
If I can't bring God along into the situation then I am not in faith and am instantly impure or defiled.

I am not pure because I don't sin.I am pure because I have faith in the lamb.
Faith cannot be sustained without love and love does not go around hurting people and seeking it's own.

This comes down from above and if I start screwing up it will follow me around until I get tired of the world and it will instanly restore me to the family.

Ephesians 2:4~6
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) 6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

Believers were dead, buried, raised and seated with Christ 2000 years ago.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Who are we to question his workmanship or how his workmanship will manifest in each one of us?

Philippians 2:13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

Philippians 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

Whitestone. Friend, this is a scripture that has been dialogued about for a couple thousand years. There is no reason to be sharp or disagreeable with one another. This is not a Scripture we disfellowship one another over.
It's ok not to agree that the verse either says you can fall away or it does not say anything about our eternal salvation. We are commanded by Christ to love one another.

As for myself, Seminary more fully went into the 6th chapter of Hebrews, and there is far more to this chapter than falling away. I loving say, I don't agree with you, but that means little in the grand picture of the total return of Jesus Christ. Blessings.

Praise the lord we live by Gods Grace and mercy towards us and not the letter of the Law as the pharises and saduces did after all did they not say that Christs interpitation was his Own and not Gods ..!! We as followers should remember that we are not in the judgement seat ..Only God knows the heart of men!!! ..As a minister i my self have had some say it was just my interpitation of the word and No more ( even though the fruit says differant,,!!! ) ..i find that statement to be very judgemental and lacking in grace ..I dont serve God to be held to mans standard But serve man to be held by GODS judgement alone .. Now that i have said that let me add ..IF AT ALL POSSIBLE BE AT PEACE WITH ALL MEN....if we judge those around us we will be held by our own judgements before the Lord ...Judge not least you be judged ..!.Rev

I agree Rev.

doesn't seem some christians consider the possibility of being wrong as if Holy spirit would give them always the correct understanding. yet there are so many different views on bible and denominations who all think they are right.

Adam was very blessed to have a state of unmerited friendship with God, but gave that up when he opposed God, called sinning against God. It's the same thing Lucifer, the great created arch angel who opposed God, causing a great separation due to holiness not capable of entertaining wickedness.

We of the year 2012 were born into the sin predicament of Adam and that of Lucifer, the first angel to oppose God, making all of us at birth "children of the Devil (Satan who lost his high name Lucifer). You (and I, and Billy Graham, and Paul, and Peter) are a child born in a family having a wicked father, you might not have realized you, as son or daughter of a wicked father, whose spiritual father was the same Satan that brought down the first man Adam, cutting him off from God, was caught up as a slave to sin, that is to oppose the holiness of God. That holiness is defined as what God calls "righteousness", which is total agreement with how God thinks and does.

You and I remain a three dimensional being comprised of a spirit-man who hopes to retain his soul (mind, will, emotions, memories, etc), and claim an admirable body sufficient to serve God. Upon first believing the gospel of Christ, you were accounted a new spirit-man so that you could have the same position Adam had in knowing God before sin entered. Your "slate" was as cleaned as mine and Adam's. So what to do with that? Will you exchange that wonderful relationship for a bite of a forbidden fruit, or will you pursue only God?

Meanwhile, God knows it will take time and much reprogramming to bring your mind up to where your spirit-man is as a new creature. Your mind must be re-trained so as to forsake "sin-consciousness", accepting "righteousness consciousness". God allows a person to be "fixed" and "purified" (made whole) through the process of "sanctification" as explained in the Bible. As long as you choose to serve God, He will shield you from spiritual loss. There is no fancy set of doctrines you must master to be eligible for eternal salvation. Falling into occasional fits of sin doesn't disqualify your spirit-man's status with God, according to 1 John 2:1 "My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: ". God isn't examining your daily walk in terms of how much sin you do compared to good works. The Lord Jesus is working with the Holy Spirit to reconcile you continually. God the Father is looking at who you regard as his spiritual father. God of righteousness, or Satan, the Devil, father of unrighteousness.

I must at this point simply say that it is a terrible thing with God to have been changed into a living spirit-man capable of knowing God and truth, then to defy that privilege by denying God while possessing that knowledge. That denial includes denial of Jesus as Son of God, Lord, Savior, as revealed to you in times past. If that hasn't been opened up to you yet, you are not accountable for a choice such as Adam made. But for all of us who have walked in the revelati0on of God while still in the flesh we were born in, we must guard our salvation. That's why Paul wrote in Philip. 2:12 "Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling." We have many more scripture indications of potential shipwreck of our faith, but by far the emphasis of scriptures is to pursue the advantages of pursuing the teaching of Jesus our Christ of God.

Beware and take heed o reader take heed...

Beware as OSAS = Once Saved Always Saved, which basically is a license for immorality to some who still like to call themselves christians and do not repent of their sin lifestyle (because they believe to be saved anyhow) and so such are they that are still drunkerds, fornicators and adulterers fooled and lulled into sleep basically by the devil!, and another version of osas is called:
Perseverance of the saints = If Saved Always Saved which also is a lie that to some promotes to a license for immorality basically but in the end they are both still false doctrine!

Just like the devil always talks smooth calming and deceptive words...

Genesis 3
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: <--- how evil

"Ye shall not surely die" what a smooth talker he is, calming you down even whilst some due to osas are still walking around in grave sin and error! as he is always trying to give you itching ears and always giving you promises of a smooth sailing ahead no denyal of yourself basically go ahead and do what you want saying you do not have to suffer.... and sweet things instead of the bitter TRUTH of what you really need to hear! AND hearken unto!

Acts 2
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Beware!

(now granted there are some saints that support these false doctrines for a while out of ignorance or lack of knowledge in the Word of God and they do not use it as a license for sin, ok. But that still does not mean that these doctrinal lies is to be accepted as the truth because error is still error! regardless of how many followers any error has it is error! And supporting error is supporting the devil in fact in a way also as well because he is the father of all lies.......think about it do not blindly accept things from your tv preachers, do your own research and remember your sin always has a consequence and price fixed to it, (if you do not repent and confess) your future sins aren't already forgiven in advance (as in a personal go ahead go about and sin freely do not regret and do not feel worried personal debit card freely for your personal sin usage = OSAS ATM CARD to some) as some have done disgrace unto the HOLY Blood of Jesus Christ as they kept using His Grace as a license to sin how many times must i tell and warn you...)

Now listen!

Jude 1
4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.
5 I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not.

And do not turn God's Grace into a license for immorality, to go about and sin freely o beware! you will be in ill serious and i say SERIOUS DANGER trouble...!

2 Peter 2
22 But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

Reject osas! Accept Righteousness in Jesus Christ as they are His Works! and do not walk in unrighteousness they are the works of the wicked one.

For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:
Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.
It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Hebrews 10:26-31

Brother, please read the *whole* chapter 10 of Hebrews, don't cut out portions of it and interpret it out of context. The chapter is talking to Jewish people who in their hearts still tied to the tradition of animal sacrifices. And the message is: Don't do those sacrifices anymore. Because as Jewish Christians, they have been saved "once and for all" (v.10 is the emphasis) by the Lord's single sacrifice on the cross.

Furthermore, "receiving the knowledge of the truth" is not the same as: Receiving Lord Jesus as your personal savior and repenting from your sins, which is the only decision that marks someone as being saved.

Amen Dutch, absolutely. From what I've seen of a lot of those who follow after that osas doctrine, they divorce their subsequent actions from consequence. As though the "grace" of God overrides any further sins that they commit. Then they will argue that sinlessness isn't possible! Then they will alledge that those who speak of walking in righteousness, claim to do so under their "own power"! They completely ignore the crucial teaching that it is CHRIST IN US BY WHICH WE WALK IN RIGHTEOUSNESS. Such confused doctrines of the osas is completely of satan. We must be vigilant against those false teachings which we know are simply the flesh spawned wiles of the devil giving us to sin without consequence! Good post Dutch.

Dear Will,
Whoever told you that Hebrews was a writing only to Jews and not to all people, lied to you. Everyone is under the "law of sin and death", whether they were a jew or of the nations. This is totally clear in scriptures. There is no difference between a jew rejecting Christ after receiving Him, or a non-jew rejecting Christ after receiving Him. To even attempt to suggest such is heresy.
To suggest that the verses quoted are only applicable to jews who turn back to the law, instead of ALL THOSE WHO WOULD COUNT THE BLOOD OF CHRIST AN UNHOLY THING by turning back to sin, is quite definetly a deciever. Mark the person who taught you that and have no further doings with them unless they repent of their mishandling of scriptures to suit their own sinful life.
Word to the wise

The way I see it, is that salvation is a process of having been saved from things, which have stood between and God but we also must continue to be saved from things, which are between us and God until none remain. The ongoing process is possible only if we continue to allow the Holy Spirit in us to do the still necessary work. We can prevent the Holy Spirit. God gave us the ability to prevent the Holy Spirit from working in us and unfortunately, most of us have done so, but it is a practice that needs to be discouraged and discontinued:

"Quench not the Spirit." I Thess 5:19

I see it that way to, as we have the stain of Original Sin working against us, it's somthing like he is crouching at our door waiting to trip us up. we are by nature lazy self serving slobs and we need to struggle against that filth and becoming a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ, as he is the wellspring to our lives. and with out him we are lost and doomed.

Peter wrote that Paul wrote an epistle to the Jerusalem Church, and most church fathers after that agreed, the overwhelming evidence giving Paul authorship, and the letter to the Hebrews was directed to the heart of the Judeo-Christian "mother church community in and around Jerusalem. The other Christian community, the Gentile Church outside Israel (including Judeo-Christians Paul and John found in Asia) eventually replaced the Jerusalem centered sect. While Peter and the other apostles had their beginning at Jerusalem, in part keeping parts of the Mosaic Law, eventually departed from that old way as they developed in knowledge. Paul made a valiant effort in the epistle, by inspiration of the Holy Spirit, to show the Judeo Christians why they needed to abandon the Mosaic Law. Some did, but many went back entirely to Moses. Upon the conversion of Cornelius the Gentile Church expanded around the world.

I agree, Hebrews is for all Christians, but historically the letter was aimed at Jerusalem's Christians who were creating problems for the Church at large by demanding a mixing of gospel and Law even after the first Jerusalem council in Acts 15.

The warning Paul penned in Hebrews is a very serious one, mostly directed towards believers of either community who shamed their well established born-again status by deliberately re-entering a life of sin.

That is just what we are in our flesh alone. To become overcomers, we must yield to the Holy Ghost. Only the Holy Ghost working in us can overcome all that would and does oppose God.

Your understanding is beautiful :) Amen! WE can't do it. Only Christ Himself COME into us can do it. HE is our Holy Spirit. He already overcame in His body when He was Jesus in the flesh. NOW, we receive His resurrected, ascended and Glorified Spirit Self INTO us so that He can fight against my temptation to sin, preventing me from sinning and making ME Holy even as He is Holy! Such a glorious deliverance from sin we have! Thank you Jesus!

You say Jerusalem sect ? and a Gentile Church ?
Are you implying there are two types, as i think there is only one and that is the people of Christ as there is no Jew or Gentile when one is in Christ.
And Jesus Christ never said anything against the Law at all, ever.
Any Christian that rejects the Law is of Satan.
God gave us the commandments not Satan.
Satan opposed the 10 from the start, when Holy Moses came down with them. as Satan had his Golden Calf for the people, to look up to and they tried to kill Moses, as satan's followers are the ones called murderers from the beginning.
Jesus brings salvation to us, as he encompasses the 10 in his 2 and it's his 2 that over shadow all. and this is how Grace works.

My answer to the OP question is that no born again person can "lose" their salvation, but any can abandon/reject Christ, making shipwreck of their saving faith, with no hope of eternal life. Paul reached out to his Jewish peers who had no further excuse after reading the epistle of "Hebrews". They couldn't discount the vital blood of Jesus as the final accepted sacrifice, putting above that flesh circumcision and law-keeping, and remain Christian. It's a matter of history that most of them fell back into unbelief as well as failed to be successful with their old dogmas.

The Church which remained within the walls of Jerusalem, worshiping in the Temple areas allowed to them, tended to add the Gospel of Christ to the Mosaic Covenant such that the only differences between them and Jews as naming Christ as Messiah, and adding Sunday to the last day of the week Jews worshiped on. They mixed Moses and Jesus, and it is solidly understood that the Church at Jerusalem became powerless through that mixing of covenants unto the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple in 70 AD. That ended the Church at Jerusalem, as citizens of Jerusalem and Israel at large were dispersed by Rome. That didn't stop such "Judaizers" (the Circumcision, a sect of Christianity) from continuing to insist on a mixing of the two covenants, even after they agreed to stop in Acts 15. After all, were not Christians heirs of Abraham's promise? Those earliest Jesus believers who wanted the Law of Moses to be added were Paul's "thorn in the flesh" all his life, throughout his missionary journeys. Paul remained steadfast, leading the other apostles to understand why the Mosaic Covenant had been abolished in the blood of Jesus, which ratified the New Covenant. Begin with thinking out Ephes. 2:15 "Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; "
to understand that the Mosaic Covenant stood a long time to preserve the Jews as a peculiar people until Jesus the Christ should come to make peace with men and God.

The word "sect" simply means there were and remain different groups holding different dogmas based on scriptures and traditions, giving rise to the many denominations of Christianity today. It isn't an inherently bad term, used to identify disagreements between religious communities. Acts 15 proves there were at least two different sects of Christianity, requiring a compromise between them. Ever since then judaizers have attempted to increase the Moses portion.

The souls that Paul, John, and eventually Peter and the other apostles sought to win were among pagans, mostly citizens of Asia Minor, chiefly in what we today call modern Turkey. Judaism was a very strange religion to them. However, they far more readily accepted the concept of Jesus being in the class of deity, while the Judo-Christians tended to downgrade Jesus to status of prophet, much like Muhammad persuaded his followers to think. Muslims accept Jesus as a prophet among prophets, a holy man, but not deity. Paul's teachings defied that, resulting in a "Gentilized Church" that eventually and very substantially replaced the Judao-Christian philosophy, promoting the truth that Jesus was indeed One of the Triune Godhead. However, with Paul having his roots as a Pharisee, a master of the Law of Moses, and a Jew, he didn't abandon the Jew-Church, writing at least the one epistle, that marvelous letter to them, called Hebrews. There remains no further argument for convincing those precious Jewish souls to completely convert over to Jesus, while appreciating Moses for bringing them to Christ.

The LAW is holy and just, and yes, Jesus never condemned it.....but...... He replaced it with the Law of Life and Liberty, the NEW COVENANT. That new COVENANT is better than the old commandments, the new wineskin better than a dried out cracked old wineskin that leaked.

I believe someone who is born again can't lose their salvation. I base this off :[h=3]1 John 2:19 " They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us."[/h]

The antichrist folk of the preceeding verse, yes. They never had the "Unction" (next verse) from the Holy One. The Holy Spirit of Christ they never received into their flesh.

But the OP was referring to people who had already been saved... which of course could only be those who were filled with the Holy Spirit.

As we know from all the scriptures provided to this point, the folk who were once saved, aka filled with that Unction, or Holy Spirit, THEN turned away, those folk are the ones who "crucify the Lord afresh" and no more sacrifice for sin remains.

Big difference as I see it.

Peace
