Can a Christian Backslide?

Yes a Christian can back slide to the point that they lose all their rewards but they can not lose their salvation.

1 Corinthians 3:10-15
10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.
11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.

15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

Look at king David as an example. He killed people to hide his adultery but he repented and was a man after God's heart.

Thank you both for your replies
Forgive me for writing about myself more here, it is just a little easier to explain my thoughts that way

I think my honest answer would be to say I don't know whether I would have continued into pure unbelief
There was never even a moment in the darkest and worst days of backsliding when I didn't believe (Thank God)
Disbelief just didn't happen....just a horrible sense of rebellion and being away from God
And the dear Lord was always there with me He didn't forsake me.

At that crunch life and death moment when I was faced with the verse Choose you this day who you will serve, I have often wondered what may have happened had | ignored what I was this seemingly final call from the Lord.....Would I have just died (it was a physically real situation) or would the beautiful striving of the Spirit have just stopped?

I knew a man who appeared to be a lovely, Christian....committed, devoted, sincere, consecrated (every word you might think of)
Many were surprised when he backslid and turned away from the Lord
Now he is an openly "Jesus hating" and mocking atheist, denying with extreme hatred everything he once proclaimed to believe
Only the Lord can judge....but I do often wonder was he ever truly saved or has he just backslidden to a point of no return where his heart is cold and hardened?

Like I keep saying: How does one "fall away" from a God like ours?

Hello RJ.

Who knows how the process works or why the event itself happens. But people according to
the scripture do 'fall away'.

1 Timothy 1:4
But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to
deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons.

  • Excuse me, where does your above verse talk about falling away? I see it refering to endless geneaologies and myths?
  • O.K., you must be talking about 1 Timothy 4:1
  • DHC, you must know the difference between a "Head Christian" and a "Heart Christian". These people in the 1 Tm 4:1 verse where head christians and , especially when the Anti-Christ comes, many a head christian ( Christians in name only, with out Christ in them) will fall away.
  • You must admit, that we have plenty of head christians in our churches today....like these: Revelation 3: 16-18, Matthew 7:21
  • You are taking 1Tm 4:1 out of context. A true Christian with Christ in them will never fall away to a rejection from God.
  • DHC, you have Christ in you right? Did you put him there or did God? Show me one scripture where God says he will remove himself!
