If any of men's ways are close to the Way of God's people, it would probably a be a perfect socialism or even a perfect communism. For all the benefits we may have derived from our measure of democracy in the United States, the Kingdom of God is definitely not a democracy. As for a perfect socialism or communism, there has never been one that I know about in the history of this planet so have a care in moving in that direction. The perfect government must have Christ as its Head with God as the Head of Christ.
Anyone who thinks they should have the right vote out of office even bad pastor or minister doesn't, I believe, understand the Way of God as it is expressed in the Bible.
But, my friend be careful about using this information to put down your father, even if he really is wrong:
"Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;
That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth." Eph 6:2-3

This is what the children of Israel were under until they insisted on being like everyone else and having a king to rule over them. When they went to the prophet, Samuel, and insisted on having a king, they in effect were rejecting God's rule over them. People today have done this and are doing this especially in many of the churches that supposedly are God's churches.

There is always the danger of moving to a dictatorship when men are involved.
Hitler called himself a socialist because he felt the state should own everything.
In his version however "he" was the state.
In Stalin's version,Stalin was the state.
A capitalist democracy is a dirty engine that is supposed to fragment power to keep any one person or small group of people from owning everything,but after 200 years in the U.S. the top 1% end up owning 99% of everything anyway.
Competing with one another for resources causes horrible side effects.
But man's cooperation without God would just end up in another tower of Babel.
His father is not wrong in that man apart from God can't be trusted and is less destructive when fragmented.
That's what the tower of Babel reveals,we are better off somewhat fragmented until our hearts can cooperate in God's love.

Yes, this is the problem with men's best ideas. Unfortunately when it left in the hands of men alone to implement those ideas it will go astray.
Babylon or Babel is already here, not just in the governments of men, but also in the churches of men. Babylon or Babel simply means "confusion".

We haven't heard directly from the father of Jesusloverboy, so we don't know where the father actually stands, but as you say we do know we cannot trust any man who is working "apart from God".

There is no government run by men that does not end up with the few ruling the many whether it be socialist, democratic, theocracy or any other government.
America is a Corporate Empire that calls itself democratic.
You can call yourself a socialist and still follow Jesus. The western form of "democracy" leaves much to be desired. There are worse governments such as North Korea and most 10-40 window states.
We will not be asked what our political bent was on judgment day. We will be accountable for what we did with our Lord's final instructions before He ascended, "What did you do about the Great Commission? Did you work in the Father's fields?"
The first three centuries did not find the saints trying to tame the Roman beast. They prayed for those in authority but did not specifically try to change the government. Their mission was to spread the Gospel. Some in high places became believers but they were not the brunt of the target. Most Christians at the time were not in contact with those in high government places in normal day life. Paul was an exception.
American style democracy has produced more innocent bloodshed since 1973 than the totality of Hitler's Nazi Germany. So much for democracy.
Theocracies are similar to dictatorships such as Saudi Arabia. Islam is enemy to the Gospel yet a fetus in a Muslim woman has a better chance of being allowed to be born than a fetus in a Western mother.
Extreme left and right or extreme liberal or conservative both fall way short of the Kingdom of God and are equally on dangerous shaky ground. Extreme right conservatives claim to be against abortion yet most in this camp could not see through Bush Jr's hypocritical partial birth abortion ban. The "ban" did not save one baby. The wording of the legislature stated how to kill a full term fetus without it being "partial birth". Kill the baby before the nose presents or kill the baby if it is breach presentation before the nose presents and it is not a "partial birth abortion" procedure but the outcome is still death.
Another equally relevant question could be:
"Can I call myself a Democrat or Republican and still be a believer"
Yes to all three. Can I hate my brother and still be a believer? Nope.

Let's look at some scripture. The first one below should be enough to give us a proper perspective of what we're really talking about, but I'll add a couple as I move on.

I would tell both you and your father to be less concerned with worldly labels, than with walking in His way. Being Holy, Pure, Loving, adhering as much as possible to His Word that you might be seen as worthy servants of our King, our Lord, our Savior, our God!
I would wonder what any political party would say if you told them that your serve the King of Kings and that He's your friend?
Our duties are clear. Remembering that by belonging to Him. Our choice has been made for us. We are His and not the worlds nor do we belong to some earthly political party over the Kingdom of God that we are citizens of.
If you vote for leadership. Then vote for the one that adheres to the Word of God! At least as closely as possible. For in one party they might feed the poor, but agree with abortion. In the other they might disagree with abortion, but have the orphans and widows care for themselves. Is one more righteous than the other? Pray for wisdom and understanding. If believer you are. Then use the tools you have available to you. The Word of God and the Holy Spirit who is there to guide you in all things.
John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
It would be better that you and your father come together in prayer and learning of God's Word and honoring the Most High above the petty politics of this world. That you might fulfill the commission set before all Christians.
Matthew 28:19-20 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Always remembering that we should love each other as He loves us.

In closing. You'll see where a person stands if you tell them that you balance politics against the Word of God. Regardless of their politics you'll be very surprised by the persons reaction! I don't think it is really an issue with you loving Jesus and wondering whether you going to heaven because of your allegiance to a particular party who shares contradictory religious beliefs. Is God a respecter of persons?
The issue rather, for you to ponder upon is whether you willing to vote in to leadership a person who will go against your beliefs. (think controversial issues: homosexuals? Abortion? All forms of Discrimination?.....etc. .....Are you willing to vote for someone who will persecute you due to your religious beliefs? (just an illustration)
At the end of the day it's your choice. Be sure that you are willing to leave with the consequences of those choices.

Socialism gives equal things to all people, regardless how hard they work. That is the basic one sentence summary. Jesus taught that He didn't do things that way. Read starting at Matthew 25:14 about the talents. The story tells of men being rewarded based on what they did for their lord, not being given equal things regardless of what they did. Socialism does not agree with what Jesus teaches.
With that said, I don't think you're going to Hell or are not a Christian specifically for feeling how you do. Would I personally disagree with you on your views? I would, because I believe in what Jesus teaches, and I don't believe He teaches socialism.

Many people want to group Christians in a tight little bundle. Christians come from all different experiences of life. Some have lived in prisons all their life, some have lived in castles, some have served as missionaries and some have served as the mother of three kids.
The only thing I would suggest, is researching for yourself whether what you believe matches what you do. That is, does my view of myself as a socialist please God? Does the Bible support and teach socialism? Emilia has pointed out a few of the factors that are affected by these things, and Christ4Ever has some excellent scripture and advise to consider. They are both dead on.
But if you truly seek to please God, and not yourself. You'll always end up with the truth in the end. Just don't give up looking. God will show you if you pray.

The overall point, including everything that I stated behind it, is most certainly not misleading, and is absolutely accurate.
God does not promote socialist systems created by men. The difference is who is making the decision. Beyond these simple profound points, it begins to dissolve into unprofitable debate and discussion.
I do agree there are traits of socialism that may be good IN THEMSELVES. But socialism is a far more complex system than my one statement, or your one statement. Any "one-sentence" statement can be misleading for a multi-faceted system.
