“You shall fear the Lord your God and serve Him and shall swear by His name. You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the people which surround you (for the Lord your God is a jealous God among you). Otherwise the anger of the Lord your God will be inflamed against you and destroy you from off the face of the earth. You shall not tempt the Lord your God, as you tempted Him in Massah. You shall diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and His testimonies and His statutes which He has commanded you. You shall do what is right and good in the sight of the Lord that it may be well with you and that you may go in and possess the good land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to drive out all your enemies before you, just as the Lord has spoken.” (Deuteronomy 6:13-19 ESV)

This is Old Covenant teaching. These are God’s instructions to his people Israel of the Old Covenant via his servant Moses. As Christians, we do not live under the Old Covenant liturgical, ceremonial, sacrificial, purification, and dietary laws and restrictions. But much of what was commanded of God under the Old Covenant is still commanded of God under the New Covenant. For his moral laws, based on his divine character, never went away.

For the New Covenant teaches the fear (honor, respect) of the Lord, and the necessity of service to him, and that we are not to go after other gods (not be idolatrous). And the New Covenant warns us against living in idolatry and in sinful pleasures and in immoral living, that if this is what we practice, and not walks of obedience to our Lord and to his commands, in holy living, that we will not inherit eternal life with God, but we will die in our sins.

The New Covenant teaches us diligence in keeping the commands of our Lord under the New Covenant. It teaches us that we can’t just play games with God and treat him with dishonor and disrespect and still think we will go to his heaven when we die. Under the New Covenant we are instructed to do what is right and good in the sight of the Lord, and not evil, that it may be well with us, and that we might have the hope of eternal life with God.

For faith in Jesus Christ is basically the same under the Old Covenant as it is under the New Covenant. In both cases faith=obedience to our Lord. And deliberate and habitual disobedience to God=unbelief. If sin is what we practice, and not righteousness, and not holy living in obedience to our Lord, then regardless of what faith in Jesus we profess with our lips, we will not have salvation from sin and eternal life with God in his eternal kingdom.

So, don’t write off the whole Old Testament as though none of it still applies to our lives today. For if any of it is repeated for us in the New Testament, by Jesus, and by his New Testament apostles, then we still have to obey it. They may not word it all in exactly the same ways, but it is still relevant to our lives today if it is retaught as part of the New Covenant relationship we now have with Jesus Christ. So please take this to heart and obey God.

As the Deer

By Martin J. Nystrom
Based off Psalm 42:1

As the deer panteth for the water
So my soul longeth after You
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You

You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You
